Don't forget the Soviet occupation he also suffered under. For him, the war lasted much longer than any of the other allies. He only got his freedom back in 1989.

I'd not call it suffering, because then no words for the Nazi occupation would be left. It was more of a prolonged house arrest. An unfair one, maybe. But movie-wise, I would not be averse to more drastic interpretations.

The anon above, to whom I replied, was actually talking about the time *from the end of the war "for others" up to 1989*. That is, the time Poland was in the Warsaw pact. That's a bit later than 1939-1945, regarding which I completely agree with you.
