Oh god, when I was eight I cried for about two hours about how I didn't have anything important to fight for/an exciting life. Even now, I don't respect America's army -- partially because they wage unnecessary wars, but mostly because I don't believe machine guns require quite as much "deep thought" as swords. Obviously, you have to be in great shape physically, but where's the strategy? Where's the effort you have to put in to fight someone? It's too easy to kill people brutally now, without any respect for their skill or even for their existence (hello, atom bombs). I feel like whatever minor glory there might have been has been lost...

Also, Aragorn was my first love, so that was DEFINITELY something that made me want to participate in a war like that.

I don't even like war, but I take umbrage with your assumption that having a gun requires no strategy. If the main purpose of war was to kill people, maybe not. But with that purpose, swords also require no strategy. I assure you, trying to neutralize an opponent without killing anyone, and without him killing anyone, require some strategy. Please take some military classes, before you spout off what seems like an ill-formed opinion.
