Hey, you can always try for a semester at any of the sorts of universities that have that "old stone" thing about them. I know the shitty little state school I went to had a 6 week summer program at Oxford, which is about as old stone as you can get.

But really I was just here to say History Boys comment is awesome, even if it's a sad secret about it.

I read this secret and immediately knew I had to comment.

I know exactly how you feel, on BOTH accounts of the secret.

Though History Boys didn't make me realize it...it was a Harry Potter Marauders fic... go figure.

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

you're definitely not alone, on either counts. my best friend graduated from oxford last year and another is doing his masters at cambridge at the moment and i love the stories they tell me, but it makes me sad sometimes that my university experience is nothing like that, thankful though i am to be at university at all.

that movie has got me through a lot... I've seen it so many times I've actually lost count.

I wouldn't worry about "not being clever enough" for the big famous unis. Hector wouldn't. (and he went to Sheffield)

Nothing! I'm sure it's a lovely place (based on my brother's girlfriend, who's from there). I just meant... well, there's Sheffield Uni and there's Oxbridge. They all have their merits. The merits aren't necessarily the same, though.

Nothing to be lost by trying! If you want to experience that kind of environment, why not apply to Oxbridge? At the very least you'll probably get an interview, and get to stay in one of the colleges for a few days (at Oxford, at least, don't know if Cambridge has the same policy).

Cambridge interviews 90% of its applicants, so even though their interview time is shorter - most people don't have to stay overnight - you're almost guaranteed a trip there if you apply :)

I did indeed apply to Oxbridge, though as an international applicant I didn't get to travel there for my interviews. :/ I didn't do well enough in the A Levels at the end of the day, so I'm basically just bitter and angry like Irwin. Heh.

OP, try and turn it into something positive. The first time I watched The History Boys, I had a load of - guess what - History coursework hanging over my head, which had been frustrating me for weeks because it's my weakest subject and my teachers had basically given up on me, giving me Cs and Ds on all my drafts. Watching the film made me remember the reason I chose History A-level anyway, and gave me the motivation not to give up on it - and now I'm off to Cambridge in October (not to study History, though, thank god - English instead!).

Sorry to be tl;dr, but The History Boys helped me so much when my confidence was wobbling that I hope you can make it do the same for you.
