Isn't that true of any show though? I mean, I'm not into ice skating but a friend of mine is, so that's the only reason I care. But I do like Doctor Who, and the number of people who are OMG I AM NOT WATCHING ANYMORE!!!! now that David Tennant has left is pretty high. They were just in the show for Tennant, not for the format of the show. I may not get it (because I'm in the show for the format of the show, not Tennant), but I also wouldn't tell someone to watch something they are no longer deriving enjoyment from.

I mean, I might say, "Hey, watch the first episode with the new guy and see how you like it" in the same way I might say, "Well, hey, watch the first competition after Weir and Lambiel have left and see if any of the new guys catch your fancy." If they do, hey! Great! If they don't, um. Not that big of a deal.

(There's also the fact that it's a matter of months between Doctor Who series and four years between Winter Olympics. Not that the ice skaters don't have lots of competitions between them, but fandom seems to dry up between games.)

Well, it's understandable that it dries up. The Olympics are almost unavoidable when they're on. I have never watched the Olympics and this year was no exception, and yet I still know a lot about them, and even saw clips and things via other news sources, whatever. If you want to watch any other competitions, you've really got to hunt them down. Even Nationals, etc., not to mention events in countries other than your own. Plus, right now, like Weir has a TV show and Lysacek is on Dancing With the Stars, etc., so it's easy to follow them. Those won't last four years, that's for sure and if Weir (or Lysacek, who whoever you're watching for) retires between then and now . . . well, yeah. I mean, if in 2011 Weir decides not to compete in the 2014 Olypmics are you really going to wait three years to watch men's ice skating just to see if there's a new guy you care about? I mean, some people might, if they'd watch anyway, but.

Well I remember when Battlestar Galactica went off the air for sixteen months. I got new fandoms, new interests and I didn't bother watching it again until it was over and even then I just. I didn't care anymore. My fannishness had died 14 months earlier.

OT but the second doctor icons in this thread make me smile :D

We used to have an FS fandom which was mostly active exactly between the Games. So, I don't think it's actually the Olympics, because this event usually brings passers-by into the fandom, and they tend to move on to the next hot thing.

Also you have to distinguish between being an FS fan and being in an FS fandom. These do not necessarily overlap. I keep writing about the people that have either retired some time ago or are completely invisible (and on the verge of retiring, too). I don't think the retirement can actually change anything if you're really interested in your characters. Or maybe it's just me, don't know. :)

I hear ya but with the internet, fandoms seem to last longer b/c the info is so much more accessible. I am so glad there are other longtime fans that can direct me (a noob to Stephane-how did I miss him 4 yrs ago??????) to all the good stuff. But yeah, I'm 3/3 now for picking athletes that retire soon after I find them. *sigh* Good thing is I am sure both of them will keep busy.

THE MAGICAL ZEBRA AND THE ~SWAN~!!!!!!!!

I feel kind of the same way. Women's this year wasn't the same without Kimmie Meisner or Sasha Cohen or ANYONE that I recognized, but I've become fans of the new skaters as well. As long as you continue to follow it, you probably won't lose intrest despite the new people coming in.

Though it you're only there for the Prince and Princess and not the fact that it's figure skating, then you might have more trouble staying interested...

I know what you mean. I got into figure skating around fifteen/sixteen years ago, and I'm still an avid watcher, but it just hasn't been the same since Yagudin retired.

I hope Weir retires this season and I don't see or hear about him ever again. Especially since IMG doesn't want him. It doesn't take lots of time for the fangirls to calm down; we've already seen how it works with Lambiel who's already "retired" once. If you're retired why can't you just stay retired?! Sometimes I think that it might actually take a stake through the heart for people like Plushenko and Lambiel to finally retire once and for all and friggin' stop coming back every once in a while like friggin' vampires. Especially Plushenko.
