Ditto on being an American who had no idea at all that's apparently a racial slur. ??? That's a phrase I use all the time when I'm pissed off about people tip-toeing around issues, and no one has ever informed me I was accidentally being insulting.

I'm actually curious where in America that's prevalent, 'cause... it's not something I've ever heard where I live, which is, honestly, a part of America you'd expect to hear racial slurs.

It's not usually insulting, but in the context of the secret, I can see how it would have been.

I'm from Philadelphia and, while I've never heard it actually used, I'm definitely aware of it as a racial slur. It strikes me as being a bit dated - more like 'coon' than 'nigger'. But it's still an incredibly offensive word.

I'm curious as well. I live in Baltimore, MD, which has a large black population, and I've never heard it used as a racial slur.
