The part of this that doesn't make sense is that you are assuming the fic in that fandom are mediocre, you don't know they are because you haven't actually read any of them. If you're so worried about that, it's a wonder you ever discovered the first fic to begin with, since you have to take the risk of accidentally reading a mediocre fic to discover it. If you aren't interested in the fandom anymore that's one thing, or if you know enough about the different writers that you know you don't care for their fic. What doesn't make sense is assuming that no one can ever live up to that first fic you read without actually looking for other good fics.

From your comment I see that out fic-reading habits are very different, so I should have said before that I'm only writing about my own experience, which may seem weird to you. The thing is, when I first start reading fanfiction in a particular fandom, I read everything I can find. After some time I get familiar with the tropes for this fandom and the fic starts getting repetitive. That's when I start being picky. And the longer I stay in the fandom, the pickier I get. And sometimes the moment comes when looking for those other good fics is just too much trouble. It's far easier to switch to another fandom where I at first I'm not picky at all.

Oh, and I don't assume the fic is mediocre. It may be great, but as I said above, I personally don't like it. That's actually not the same thing.

I misunderstood you, then. I also get much pickier the longer I'm in a fandom, usually after a few months I'll rarely read fics unless their premise really sticks out to me. When you said you'd prefer if it wasn't the first fic you read in a particular fandom, it confused me because I couldn't see how you'd be able to compare it and make a 'best fic' judgment without knowing what the other fic is like. I also only used the word mediocre because you said you didn't want to go through a lot of mediocre fics to get to something good, but my point was just that you can't actually know they're mediocre unless you do read them.
