at some point it stops being about 'racial awareness' tbh. it seemed like a lot of the black members automatically thought because someone is not black they don't know how to behave themselves in discussion. all those posted race rules and videos where supposed to "prevent" fail but it just seems rude and presumptuous on their part. if someone said something racist and then the mods let them have it, i would have understood and appreciated their intervention linking that person to those materials instead of telling me from the start 'YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT TALKING WITH BLACK PEOPLE, SO HERE'S A LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS. IT APPLIES TO ALL OF US BUT WE'RE NOT OF HIVE MENTALITY!"

plus they have a mod who would call someone a racist at the drop of a hat and exaggerate everything to horrific proportions. one person, ONE PERSON, who said they wanted someone to take uhura down a "peg or two" in a kinkmeme was slapped with the label racist. no one ever asked the op what they meant, never asked if they where aware that it could be misconstrued as racist and misogynistic, they where just labeled and back up from the comm was called to war in the thread. thats when s/u fans got a horrible reputation on lj and it never fucking ended because any body who spoke out against s/u, or uhura or zoe HAS TO HAVE ~latent racist tendencies~ because this person and people defending the op told them they were digging too deep. another time, one person on f!s posted a secret about sucky stories in the s/u fandom (not even identifying the community specifically) and then OHSHITSON! so it wasn't racial awareness i have issue with, its using race to, like you said, bully everyone into following what they believe is the proper way to like/enjoy uhura. you MUST recognize she is black and black women are like this....while white girls are like this...you MUST understand this to *get* her character. YOU MUST. which is why there are shit load of OT posts like UHURA NEEDED BLACK HAIR TO REALLY BE BLACK, UHURA AND THE BLACK BRUTE TROPES, S/U AND MARTHA/TEN ~WHITE PPLZ HATE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK~. NEWSFLASH!!1 a lot of ppl didn't like rose/nine, objected crazily to it, but that's ok and expected because anything that happens in fandom is subject to scrutiny. but since martha's black there can be no objections because....SHE'S BLACK!!?????? yes there are racists, but its hard to pick them out from people who seriously don't like the pairing because of whatever reason so play it safe AND DON'T INCLUDE EVERYBODY WHO OBJECTS TO THE PAIRING AS A RACIST BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU SOUND LIKE A FUCKWIT AND MAKES THE REST OF US LOOK BAD.

I don't ship S/U, but I've seen the wonder (cough) that is the S/U comm and I feel your pain. I would never, ever want my OTP's comms to look like that (to put it mildly.)

Not the anon you're talking to, but iirc, it wasn't one story, but like a lot of stories in general (I think they called out the rather OOC kid!fic that's been floating around, though)

like the poster above said, they were talking about ALL the fics that involve spock being WILDLY OOC (speaking slang, being fluffy with uhura, excessive pda...ect), babies! named grayson or amanda, marriage...basically the all around pussification of Spock. and a lot of the big name writers of s/u where there (before in-fighting drove them out WHAT OTHER TREK FANDOM HAS THAT PROBLEM?!?!?!!)do ALOT of that so they got sad and then angry. you can pretty much click on any story there and see for yourself, especially ones by bana05, recumbenantgoat or ankhesen_mie (who writes the R U A RACIST quiz).

Don't forget that epic mirror universe saga where Spock rapes and impregnates Uhura and is painted as this omg feminist hero! And yet no one has a problem with her portrayal because it's omg so sexy

If I never see kid!fic (especially if it's set immediately after the movie) where their BAY-BEE~ is named Grayson then I will be overjoyed.

honestly i think pinkelegance just go scared with the original story line when there was all backlash. i would have been fine with her painting mirror verse spock as s complete dick because GUESS WUT: IT'S MIRROR VERSE! spock is allowed to be evil, kirk and everyone else was, so i dont know why spock is put on this holier than all place. her audience just wasnt ready for it so now its this weird mix which is why i think the kink meme involving s/u is so VANILLA AND BORING AS FUCK.

Yeah I don't think the place that can't handle a less than perfect Uhura can deal with a less than perfect Spock.

A part of me feels kinda bad about not liking recumbentgoat's weird TOS fic, I mean, she's spent money on the pairing. That's....dedication.

shes a part of that inner circle clique that dominates the comm so her friends help her with the illusion that her stuff is good when its really not

To be fair she does put a warning at the top Warning: Swearing. Possible OOC behaviour although it should read DEFINATELY OOC BEHAVIOR. This is the kind of S/U filler that f!s poster was talking about.

Yeah, she did. All her fics are essentially like that; I can't recall off the top of my head if that OOC warning is on all of 'em, though.

What annoys me is that the OOC behaviour warning is on almost all the fic that's posted at the comm nowadays.

She's commissioned a ton of artists for S/U art.

I was the person who posted that secret and the resultant wank was so fucking ridiculous I left the S/U fandom. Your summary is A+.
