I agree that a lot of the fic these days is OCC and I don't even read most of it now, (you have to expect that from a new fandom that's gotten so huge so fast), but I've just never found the comm to be slanted as hard as you make it out. You don't HAVE to take that quizz, or even look at it, to post there.

People raising their race concerns doesn't freak me out though. I have a kid in school and sit on a diversity forum hosted in DC so nothing that I've seen on that comm even raised my eyebrows.

If people are being driven out of the comm I think it has more to do with the fic than the occasional race debates. But maybe I'm wrong. I have found people in general to be very uncomfortable with upfront discussions about hard issues.

Incorrect. Kirk/Spock, Kirk/McCoy, Chekov/Sulu and Kirk/Sulu (the little there is) have in fact improved with the passage of time, not suffered the same decline like Spock/Uhura's. I believe this is due mostly to the ability for, say, a Kirk/Spock shipper to openly talk about their ship without fear of The Big R being played on, what should be, a purely shipping discussion. Those pairings accept the faults of the characters in a way I have never seen done with Uhura.

This is exactly why everyone rolls their eyes at

spock_uhura. No one wants to confront those hard issues all the fucking time. Okay, yeah, occasionally I want to read about Joanna, McCoy's daughter, but if I don't, there's a wide array of non-daughter fics which I can choose from - but I can't find a damn thing in that comm with any decent, Uhura characterisation which includes her flaws, not just BLACKBAMFYEAHYEAHISN'TSHEAWESOMECAUSESHE'SBLACK.

I doubt anyones gonna write Uhura as a flawed human being anytime soon. Everyone's so shitscared of creating ~RACE!FAIL~.

Well, I'm a K/S fan and I've seen TONS of OCC fic there too but I will agree that that S/U fluff and baby fic gets overwhelming. Like I said, I'm not reading much anymore. But if people are running away from the fandom because of race issues all I can do is laugh sadly.

Seriously, look at the stats - 2000 people in the comm - if only a small percentage of those people are woc who want to comment on a race related issue, that's still going to be a lot of people commenting on race issues. It's just not that shocking.

...OK? Well, that's... great for you. The fandom loses great writers, because they want to explore Uhura's character and not her skin. There are people in the world who don't want to talk about racism in their off-time.

It wouldn't be if this was a RACE COMM. If this was Discuss_Uhura's_Race then no one would complain, but this is a pairing comm. About the relationship. And that issue is why no one good posts there, and why I'm gritting my teeth at every damn post that pops on my flist.

And before anyone says unfriend, I'm an eternal optimist that there will eventually be a great Spock/Uhura. EVENTUALLY.

I'm sure there will be great S/U - there already has been. But you missed my point, look at the stats. A lot of people are going to talk about these issues because it's a big comm and a lot of the people on it are woc who may want to explore these issues more fully. Is that such a bad thing?

Yeah, it's fandom, but when has that ever stopped people from discussing what's important to them? And should it?

That said, I would love to see links to these great FF.N S/U fics, 'cause I would love some adventure fic. I almost never see that.

I don't think it's ENTIRELY the race issue that people got tired of. There's also the fact that the comm went a little too old school/TOS recently. I mean, I think most fans of this pairing are reboot newbies who, like the OP, only see these characters as played by Quinto and Saldana.

I'll admit that absolutely, interracial pairings get a tough break a lot of the time because of hidden racism. Let's face it, a lot of interracial relationships are either a) not even explored in shows/movies or b) hurdles to get past so the REAL couple can get together (hello, Harry Potter!). I just think it doesn't need to be posted every week that OMG LOOK THEY ARE INTERRACIAL.

But I've been involved in a lot of bitchy fandoms with nasty ship wars and just overall unpleasantness. NONE of them have disappointed me the way the S/U comm has cause the comm was once pretty awesome.

Honestly, the thing that horrified me most was when members would go searching for fanworks that they felt depicted Uhura in a racist or -- I swear to God -- "INCORRECT" way, which they would then post publicly to the comm in an UNLOCKED POST for all to mock and belittle and crucify till the poor author/artist showed up, rescinded, apologized, groveled, and scuttled away to hide under a damp log. And all involved would applaud their "success" in the matter.

GEE I WONDER WHY NO ONE WANTS TO CREATE ANYTHING INTERESTING FOR THIS PAIRING, you nasty fucks.

I did not believe that bit until I saw it myself and I was so let down. My thinking is if you want to change the artistic representations, you do it yourself which is why, despite the opinions above, I have a lot of respect for

recumbentgoat. She's being pro-active about making sure there is variety to S/U art produced.

Oh god, I remember that. There's point to that kind of thing.

I honestly don't know when this whole business started cause I watched that comm right from when the movie came out and things were pretty cool. Half my f-list went crazy for this pairing when it first came out so there was obviously a lot of enthusiasm and support for it that this comm just threw away.

I think that comm just brought out a lot of new LJ users who just didn't understand what the fuck LJ was for and decided to throw in their agendas. Now, it's like other than a few good graphics posts here and there, there's nothing noteworthy.

imo It started when ~certain individuals~ hijacked the comm and decided to use it to push their own agenda instead of the pairing (i.e. unending posts about Uhura's race, witch hunting for fics/anything that portrayed her "wrong" so they could post, mock, and act holier-than-thou; hissing at those meanies who don't like our OTP, etc)
