Howdy! I don't know if you meant to reply to me, but yes, it's a very old expression. It has nothing to do with black people on its own. My initial shock was at seeing it in a fandom!secret involving a black woman. The juxtaposition seemed perhaps purposeful and mean. However, it's been pointed out to me that that word, not the phrase, in the context of race, is an American slur, and not even a widely-known one at that. :)

If the OP is not American then it might be just an innocent choice of words. Not everything is a racial slur. With all the weirdness of what might be perceived as a racial slur in America, it's hard to keep up. I only recently found out about the chicken and the watermellon thing which is completely insane to everybody else. Not all American stereotypes apply to everything.
