So, who is he?

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
pretty sure, that it's John Hughes. Who directed the breakfast club, 16 candles and weird science. So, he is kind of a god.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Stieg Larsson?

Yep. Love his books. I really wish he wasn't dead... :(

I think it's John Hughes, but damn if the google image results don't look virtually the same.

I thought Larsson too. So sad that he's dead. :(

[identity profile] astyanassa.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the logical answer to that is, though they didn't know of him before, his death brought him/his work to their attention and they found something they appreciated and/or identified with. I don't see a problem with that and it's nice that his work or legacy or what have you will live on and even grow.

That said, I have absolutely no idea who this person is.

[identity profile] astyanassa.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay, I see in another comment, it's John Hughes. I know his work well, not his face so much. Maybe it's the same for the people you're talking about, OP - they've probably grown up seeing (and loving) his movies even if they didn't know much about him, personally.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know his name now.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you.
I cried when he died. I NEVER cry when people die.
I have The Breakfast Club and Ferris Buellers Day Off, on my wall.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how you can tell that "these people" didn't know who he was or have any appreciation for his work prior to his death. He made some incredibly famous films, and while some of us may not have known much about him, we did know and identify with those works.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-28 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I was mostly talking about people I know who didn't know of him until his death which suddenly turned them into slobbering "fans" of these movies that previously I hadn't been able to convince them to watch without resorting to torture.
I have no problem with people who knew and loved his films before and are just now realising that one person was behind them and that, that one man died. They grieve just I do for what we lost even if they hadn't known his name until that moment.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know Gary Gygax's name until he died, but the things he did had a tremendous impact on my life and many of the things I enjoy. So, OP, was I entitled to my tremendous sense of loss or am I not deserving enough to react emotionally?

[identity profile] prapim.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
...is this John Hughes or Stieg Larsson? They look the same when I Googled them.

[identity profile] kelincihutan.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's John Hughes.

Mind you, I'm only sure because I Googled and then compared the images to the one in the secret. If they'd both taken a picture in this exact same pose...

You're getting elitist over massively popular corny teen comedies with a consistent racist streak which average eight showings per week on cable tv? You're doing that? This is happening?

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahahaha. Nice.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it wrong of me to dislike his films?

Well, dislike is too strong of a word...but to me I never saw them as more than stereotypical 80's teen movies, in the same pile as any of the movies that the Coreys did.

I never got the hype. :/

I feel like I missed something though, because everyone has always gone on about how awesome he was. I liked the movies, I just didn't see them as anything amazing. What'd I miss?

(Assuming this is, in fact, John Hughes)

(Anonymous) 2010-03-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I never got the hype either. Ferris Bueller was (I guess) a fun little film, but even that was all about middle class/wealth white kids who were just bored. They had no real problems other than typical teenage angst.

Having said all this, I did enjoy "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," but that may be because I hate Christmas.

Abed would have a perfect response to this.

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Nawh, I'm with you.

I did like Ferris Buller quite a bit. I wanted to be that damn kid, he got away with freaking everything.

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just you. I think he had some good stuff (I do like Ferris Bueller and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles), but he's not that great. I especially hate the Brat Pack movies (Pretty in Pink is one of the most overrated movies, IMHO)

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a teen when his movies came out, so those were MY teen movies, and I feel very strongly about them. (Even though I know that they have a lot of race problems and deal with class in a fairly simplistic way.) I'm not sure why they've had such an afterlife on cable--Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink seem to be the ones that most of the people younger than me know from television, but I think the best ones are Sixteen Candles and Some Kind of Wonderful. I also love Ferris as a fantasy, and because I adore Cameron as a character.

I don't love the teen/YA movies of people older or younger than me, either, with a few exceptions. I loved him, many Americans my age loved him, but I don't expect it of like, everyone in the universe.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's kind of insane. There's a lot of stimulus to absorb in the world, and some people may simply have not known about his movies before he died, or had time to get around to them. (Plus, what about all the artists who have died before now? Are you going to call Chaucer fans "bandwagon-jumpers?" :-P )
