Mary Poppins can fly, ergo this movie is set in happy AU where awful things like wars don't happen.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2010-03-29 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck? You're overthinking Mary Poppins.

[identity profile] endis-ni.livejournal.com 2010-03-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
As an interesting side note, the man playing Mr Banks is David Tomlinson, who was my Mother's godfather.

Wouldn't he be too old to fight anyway? He seems like he's already in in 50s in MP.

[identity profile] lefaym.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if he was in his 50s, but he probably would have been in his 40s and therefore older than enlistment age.

That's... really disheartening. :\ I know sometimes you can't help overthinking things, but I agree with the first anon - perhaps you could try and envision a happier ending for them? It does have fantasy elements after all, therefore a happy, warless AU wouldn't be entirely implausible.

dude, this is exactly how I felt when I watched "The Princess and the Frog." At the very end, when she gets her restaurant and everyone's dancing and singing and being happy, all I could picture was them losing everything when the great depression hits...

They did this to Anne of Avonlea in the crap TV movies (which I haven't watched, but which nevertheless force me to think about the fact that Anne and Gilbert's sons probably would have gone off and died in the War.)

My boyfriend also completely destroyed my childhood enjoyment of Mary Poppins by pointing out that it was a conservative film written against the backdrop of the burgeoning women's movement in the 60s, and when I sat down and thought about it I realized it is an anti-feminist film that explicitly endorses the status quo and condemns the women's movement. And that made me sad.

It's okay, anon. I do the same thing to the Jeeves & Wooster series. They are smack dab in the middle of the World Wars, so things are sure get crappy for them.

I just watched through Disney's Zorro and did the exact same thing. Spanish California in the 1820s...didn't actually exist, being as California was the property of Mexico at the time, but even allowing for that detail to be fudged, I just kept thinking that the US was going to come along and take over in about 25 years, and all the characters would have to face all of the wars and fighting and... So very depressing.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I had this problem with The Land Before Time, and Disney's Dinosaur.

I was like, okay, best-case scenario it's your kids or grandkids who will be around when the species goes extinct... :(

What I wonder about is Half Magic and Knight's Castle. You know that the Depression and WWII happen between them, but they're never mentioned.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-30 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better it's commonly argued that women's efforts during the war after suspending the suffragette/suffragist groups was what won them the vote in the end. And it brought a new change in how women were seen by society as they proved they could do the same job and as a man.

I feel where your coming from though on the war though.

[identity profile] iamshunpike.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, please get a grip. It's when people overthink this extensively that everyone's childhood memories are (sometimes permanently) fucked with, and many, many panic attacks are had. So just chill, all right? Julie Andrews would not approve.

[identity profile] interrobangings.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
...

W-wow. That's... depressing.

[identity profile] melita-r.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, God :( This was my favourite film as a child! I used to act it out with my best friend all through Reception and Year One. I was Bert, Jane and Mrs Banks, and my friend Mary, Michael and George Banks. We knew every word and dance move by heart! I was a strange 4 year old.

BRB Childhood ruined.

[identity profile] honoumiko.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
OH GOD. I had the same problem with The Secret Garden.

I was in a production of the musical, and I was playing Mary Lennox... and I was 12. A bunch of the college kids who were playing the adult roles were talking about some Canadian TV series where it thought of what might happen after the book (sort of like the Little House on the Prairie series in the US), and Dickon went off to WWI and died.

I had SO MUCH TROUBLE not crying in front of them. I was SO upset.

And it didn't help that I had a massive crush on the guy playing Dickon...
