Sounds like you think gay men are sexy. This is the internet, we don't hold with that sort of thing here.

Lan Yu?

In a way, I know how you feel. When an actor/actress plays in a homosexual role (and not just 'oh gee, I'm gay, I promise, we just never show any proof') I tend to respect them further as an actor, whether I liked them (or the film/show, for that matter) to begin with or not.

I know it's a little silly, because the money is probably worth it to most, but it just seems like the kind of thing not everyone would do, and to put yourself up for basically a target for certain fans and Us Weekly to proclaim "ZOMG, IS [INSERT CELEBRITY HERE] GAY?!" deserves at least some props, in my opinion.

I generally feel a greater respect towards actors who are cool playing whatever sexuality a role calls for, but it's more that I'll lose respect for an actor who refuses to play gay characters. I think that's probably pretty common, though? I know a whole lot of people who like both Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine better because of the gay roles they've played.

... I feel more respect if a male actor is willing to play those roles. It shows that they're daring, they value their craft, and to me, passion is very sexy. But is the role itself what makes him sexier? Not necessarily. I've always thought Jake Gyllenhaal was hot, but I gained a lot of respect for him being willing to do the role he did in Brokeback Mountain. That increased his appeal to me as a result. Though, in retrospect, I also felt the same for Jared Leto for doing such an intense role in Requiem For A Dream, and there was nothing sexual about that.

... well personally I always thought Hu Jun was all kinds of sexy. Then I saw Lan Yu and East Palace, West Palace. Now I think he's sexy and an amazing actor, which contributes to the sexy :)

But seriously, I think I understand what you're saying. For me, it applied even more so in this particular case. Hollywood may sometimes think gay roles are "edgy" and "daring" (which is stupid, but there you go). The Chinese censorship board? Not so much.

And I really can't wait for the days when playing whichever sexuality and/or gender identification will be so normal nobody will bat an eyelid.

I'd hate to say this but Hollywood isn't quite accepting of gays in film, either. Just look at "I love you Phillip Morris" - it took the director forever to find a distributor in its home country, the US, hence why the film is playing here in Europe a lot earlier than it is in the United States. Many gay films are slapped with a rating R for no other apparent reason than some guy ogling a picture of a semi-naked dude that would have gotten a PG-13 rating if either was a girl. Movies that explicitly endorse a different ideal than what Americans are used to are also slapped with this rating, and often are released only in a limited fashion in the US. Sure, we may be less strict than China, but playing the "edgy" role actually doesn't do much for distribution in the US.

(Films I'm thinking of as well: A Single Man and Motorcycle Diaries. If you look at the ratings in the US vs those in Europe, you'll find that the US most always puts the highest rating out of all the countries, and that it's often released later/ in less movie theaters)
