I think I almost definitely would have enjoyed it more had Burton been allowed to go past PG.

This was my impression of the movie as well.

Then I got my hands on the 2007 version of the script, and in some ways, am sort of glad that they did make it as light as they did. Hatter spending a great deal of time in the Red Queen's dungeon and being beaten bloody really isn't something I wanna watch.
