Same for me only it's guitar in my case. I was ready to give up until I saw that man play. He made me realize how awesome and unique it could be. Forsrs. He saved my interest. Actually, I'd go so far as to say that Muse saved music for me altogether. >.>

I was nearly the opposite-- I'd had a lot of classical piano training, was quite good at it (I'm a bit out of practice lately, long story), and totally despaired of ever making that into something relevant and powerful and modern until a friend burned me Absolution. Suddenly my technique had a use, and I didn't feel like I'd wasted years on something that'd forever be old and dusty. It also made me work a harder at Liebestraume no. 3 after I heard Endlessly (heh, thus the username) and went "nice Liszt progression there, Matt".

P.S. My present "can I please be just like him" idol is Mike Garson. Anon, do yourself a favor and check him out as well.

I was kind of meh about piano for years. I practiced ridiculous hours every day. I kept with it. I learned all those stupid beginning and middle songs. And then. It happened. I discovered Chopin and his nocturnes, that crazy bastard. His music is insane, but I love it so much, and it sparked my fire for piano. Nowadays, I listen to my ipod and write down simple sheet music from songs I like.

Oh man. Recently I've been playing so much Muse from the piano. I was put off for ages because it sounded too difficult and I can't afford the sheet music but idk, one day I just sat down and started playing and realised I could play by ear anyway. Now I play all the time ♥
