When I saw this secret, I got all excited and was hoping there would be lots of comments about it. I use Lj toys, too and I honestly don't know how fandom feels about it - if they think it's creepy and 'stalkerish' or if they just sort of assume that everyone uses something, if not Lj toys, to track hits.

I use it like you, OP, just to know how many people are actually clicking the link (I don't use lj toys embedded in a mood theme and I don't put them outside an LJ cut because I have no need to know how many people are visiting my LJ in general; I just want to know about each story specifically), and I know that it doesn't mean every single one of them reads the whole story, but when someone comes back to the story for the tenth time, I figure there must be something there they like, even if they don't comment.

I don't at all understand the usual fandom reaction to LJ Toys (which, from what I've seen, is "OMG U R A CREEPSTER HDU TRACK ME!!ELEVENTY!!). I feel like maybe people just aren't fully understanding what it is?

First of all, it's ridiculously easy to block it (Adblock will do the trick). If you really don't want to be seen, you can do something about that in about 2.5 seconds.

Second of all, it's like a shitty, inaccurate, way less obtrusive form of the webstat counters that every single page you go on the internet has already. If people are so ~offended by someone on the internet knowing that they visited such-and-such a page at such-and-such a time from whatever IP address, they'd better just stay off the internet altogether.

All of the people I know who use it use it just on their fic, as a hit-counter. If we authors aren't supposed to expect anyone at all who reads what we write to comment, then I think it's fair to use some other means of assessing whether or not anyone is reading our stuff. Writing is hard. Telling stories to myself in my own head is easy. I write because I want to share those stories with others. How am I supposed to know if no one tells me what they think and I'm also not allowed to know if anyone is even reading them?

I was kind of afraid of that, but I haven't seen anyone say it, so I didn't know. And yeah, it is shitty and inaccurate, so people shouldn't be overly concerned about being 'seen'. An ip address is very, very rarely got a username attached (in my experience, anyway) and I don't even pay attention to that for two reasons: 1) According to Lj toys, a good friend of mine that I know in RL, so I know exactly where she lives, was showing as a hit from an entirely different country, and 2) There are several BNF (in my fandom) usernames attached to a variety of IP addresses scattered all over the world. If one user 'X' shows up as having visited my LJ from California, Japan, and Australia, it's highly doubtful that they were all really 'X' (if any of them, for that matter.) So I don't try to figure out who my visitors are, nor do I even care.

No, all it's really good for is a hit counter, and it's free and ridiculously easy to use, so why not? Because:

I write because I want to share those stories with others. How am I supposed to know if no one tells me what they think and I'm also not allowed to know if anyone is even reading them?

This. So much this.

It's really just best to not mention it. People who already have a bug up their butt about ljtoys have it blocked and/or know what to look for on a page to see if you're using it, and everyone else seems to think it does a bunch of stuff that it doesn't actually do. I saw some wank here a few months ago where the OP seemed to be implying that ljtoys enabled someone to, like, track them around the internet to see what porns they were looking at, or something. No, it only allows me to see how many people are looking at my porns. And they are my porns, so, hell yeah I've got a right to see if someone's looking at them. It's not like I then know exactly who you are and am going to be able to write a letter to your mom or something.

Wank ensues when people don't take the five seconds it takes to realise that the occasional names that pop up are wrong about 95% of the time (like you, there are people I'm friends with and I know where they live, and their names pop up for IP addresses in all sorts of random places—that feature is totally useless).
