*shrugs*

For what it's worth, I can see her as caucasian. Ty Lee and Toph for some reason as well (although I think most would argue against me with those two). Anyway, I don't think there's anything wrong with having a discussion about it.

You're going to have to listen to your heart on this one, OP. If you try to live a good life, and try not to judge people based on race and assign stereotypes then... well you're probably on the right track to being a decent person. In the grand scheme of things, thinking that a cartoon character is white or Hispanic or Asian when others don't is probably not going to put you on the straight path to the KKK, you know? And I would suggest that you don't lend much credit to those who would try to convince you otherwise.

Edit: Bah-leated and reposted 'cause I meant to reply to the OP and not the thread.

My biggest problem with the movie wank is this: It is a MOVIE. Little kids are not going to see it and go: "Hey, all the main characters are white! LET'S COMMIT MASS GENOCIDE!" Yes, the casting is shitty, but there are plenty of other racist things we could be fighting that we might actually have some hope of changing. Are we fighting them? No. We are spending our time and resources on a FINISHED movie. A movie that already has been filmed with white actors, and will still have white actors no matter how much boycotting you do.

Reposted because you deleted your comment as I hit send.

Whoops! Sorry about that! :D

I'm of two minds about this. No, actually three.

1) Total agreement with you, along with a side of "Shut the fuck up about it already. I get it, okay? It's racist. God. Can we move on?"

2) Equal amounts of annoyance at the casting directors, because really, this whole thing could have been easily avoided. Well, maybe not totally avoided because you betcha there would be people bitching and moaning even if they casted the kid who plays Aang straight from a remote Tibetan temple. I really hope that some of the fandom backlash will promote greater care in the casting of the second movie. We will see.

3) I really, really, really, really, really, really (times about 100) hope that this whole racebending discussion promotes awareness of this extremely important topic and doesn't do the opposite -- get people frustrated and turn away. I've seen both happen: Some are more aware of racism than they ever were before, and some are disgusted that their hobby of choice (Avatar fandom) isn't as fun with the mud slinging and inappropriate accusations of racism. Again, we will see.

Re: OP

If the casting was perfect, the story would suck. God himself/herself/themselves/nothing could write this movie and fandom would still hate it.

I totally agree with where the racebending comm is coming from. However, some (not all) of them tend to look down on those who don't EXPLICITLY agree with every single thing they say about the fandom. I for one, would like to move past the casting, now that the movie has already been filmed, and enjoy one of my favorite shows getting a movie that isn't premiering as a Friday special.

I think political correctness is slowly going in a circle lately.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
But what does political correctness have to do with any of this? Or was that just a blanket pejorative for any discussion about race, as it seems to be. And yeah I agree that when an adaptation is made of a beloved source text, fandom tends to be really hard on it, but the implication of that statement, that fandom just looks for things to be upset about and that this is one of those instances is...kind of shitty actually. And you know what, sure it's a movie that's already been made, but that doesn't mean that all of the racebending people are focusing all of their energies all of the time on talking about it on the internet - it's possible to be interested/active about more than one thing at once. Sorry if I came off as a total asshat, btw, I'm kind of tired/grouchy what with finals and all.

Re: OP

[identity profile] lililedger.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
No, this is not one of those instances. However, without the racism, there would be one.

I was actually refering to actual Politcal Correctness. Less people would complain if Aang was played by an African American boy because it would be 'Racist.' And we've hit the point where we try to avoid being racist by making more judgements based on skintone: "You're WHITE, of course you don't care. You could NEVER understand being disliked based on something you can't control." Yes, us Caucasians are definitely priveliged, and we have NEVER had it as bad as plenty of others, but that doesn't mean we are the anti-Christ and have never had any problems ever.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
But I do think that it's possible that as a white person, you don't have the same personal stake in seeing more brown/black/yellow action heroes, y'know? Especially in movies that are targeted at little kids. Like obviously in a we-all-benefit-from-less-racism way, but, look, I actually remember realizing that the only depictions of my culture that were coming out of Hollywood were either ludicrous caricatures, or worse, ludicrous caricatures of some ludicrous amalgam of Indian/Arab/Persian cultures as if all brown people are the same. And no it didn't change my life, but I was eight and hyper-emotional, and it pissed me the fuck off and I literally felt like people hated me. Which is ridiculous, and I know that you also have had problems - and I'm really sorry if people made you feel that because you are white, you are ignorant asshat who has no empathy or self-awareness - and I know that you realize/respect why people are het up about this, but that's also the reason that people can't stop being het up and can't judge the movie on its own merits, and are a overreactive to this, you know? And re: the PC thing - first of all, I apologize for my reaction, I'm a little hair-trigger about that word since I've only ever heard it used as a pejorative, like the only reason not to be insensitive to women/queers/minorities is to score brownie points, but I also don't think that, to take our example, if Aang had been played by a black actor, people wouldn't complain because there were people who were upset that Nelson Mandela was played by Morgan Freeman as if there weren't an actor in ALL OF SOUTH AFRICA who could play the part. There would definitely be people who looked at the casting and felt, as I mentioned below, that it suggested that all minorities were interchangeable or that it tokenized minorities. And they would complain. And then other people would complain. Agree to disagree, I guess. I hope I've been more courteous this time, and I appreciate your courtesy throughout.

Re: OP

[identity profile] lililedger.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
I would point out that I said there would be LESS people who would complain if Aang were black, not that no one would complain.

The casting sucks. And I acknowledge that it does and that people are gonna bitch because it SUCKS. But it would be nice if I were not expected to bitch too.

I appreciate your courtesy as well.

Re: OP

But that's it exactly. Little kids are going to see this. Little Asian kids who might want to know why suddenly the characters that used to look like them and had the same names - Suki, Aang, etc - are suddenly all white.

Re: OP

Which, you know, SUCKS. But the movie has been filmed, nothing is going to change the casting at this point, and it is by far one of the least pressing racism issues.

Re: OP

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, obviously there are more pressing issues! If only this were the only thing we had to squabble about.

But that doesn't mean people don't have the right to be legitimately upset over the casting. It may be over and done with, but there's still rhetoric defending the casting choice (which I honestly can't see as acceptable) and a continued trend of whitewashing in Hollywood movies. Which I mean, is no excuse to be rude or dissolve into pointless name-calling wank (which it always ends up being), but just because it isn't a serious or threatening issue doesn't mean people can't complain about it.

Re: OP

[identity profile] lililedger.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care that people complain about it. I think it sucks too. But I would like if people did not condemn me because I DON'T complain about it.

Re: OP

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I certainly would have hoped that people wouldn't condemn you for it. :( I'm sorry you had to deal with that attitude.
