I'm actually really sorry for generalizing, I definitely could have worded that better. I meant that it's been taken, like you said, from a variety of Asian cultures, and it wasn't right for me to just lump them all together.

Honestly, if the main cast had been cast appropriately, then I doubt casting Suki as "white" would be that big of a deal. Her looks are rather ambiguous (although I would assume some sort of Japanese influence with my limited knowledge, but that just may be an ignorant opinion). Unfortunately it didn't play out that way, and although the casting team seems to be cleaning up their act (casting Suki with a Filipino actress and hopefully Toph following suit after the background cast of the Earth Kingdom), I still think the arguments used to defend Suki as white are the same justifications Paramount and Shyamalan used for the casting of the Katara, Aang, and Sokka. Or any whitewashing in fact. And that's really what gets me ":/".

I don't even know now. They always looked greyish to me, but the OP said they looked blue. She is a rather tricky character! :D

Yeah, I agree. TBH I don't give a shit about the kid the chose for Aang. I mean, I wouldn't say he is the GREATEST pick they could have made, but if he moves right and just seemed like him, I could deal with him being a lil white kid from the midwest. All the changes they blatantly made piss me off to no end, especially altering entire races to try and "fix" the blunders they made. Don't they have enough money to hire PR reps? OY. I'm so sick of hearing from some of my actor friends in Philadelphia who are blond and blue eyed telling me how they were Water Tribe extras. Sweden, really Shyamalan??

I could arguably see her as Chinese, since the Earth Kingdom tends to seem like they borrow much more heavily from them, esp with the symbol of the...area itself, the large expansiveness, and just the things I've learned from the ancient culture as a whole with my research on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Also green... lots of green. lol

The lighting is always different, I can't even find consistent screencaps. uGH

Ahhh, honestly, I am so done with this film and this casting fails and all the drama that comes in these debates which I can never keep myself away from! From now on I think I'm going to try to imagine these films don't exist, pray for a flop, and shamelessly pimp the animated series to everyone I know. Because the animated series was amazingggg.

I mean, remember that time Sokka became a sword master because he was innovative and original, thus finding a niche that was completely his own? Wasn't that just awesome?! So much better than a movie that's some unoriginal rehash of other lacklustre blockbusters! Why do I torture myself in even thinking about it?

I was trying to be that way, then I made the mistake of wanting to see Iron Man 2 and all the fail was being burned into my eyes. UGH, I'm going to see PoP soon, too. >_<

LOL, WELL SAID. I am 100% ok with retellings that fit their genre, but this is supposed to be omg so close to the original we all die of anticipation but oh wait, race flips and oh wait, shyamalan made the fire nation explode in black leather and oh wait, bending isn't like bending for realz and oh wait, Zuko's scar is more like he slept on his hair wrong and oh wait, half of season one is now in the other movies and nothing makes sense anymore and I'm going crazy because everyone in this area has a Shyamalan hard on and ugggggggggggh. I want to ignore it. :[ :[ :[

Oh lord, what was wrong with Iron Man 2? Haven't seen it yet, but I haven't heard anything about it either! (And ahhhhhh Prince of Persia, why is it Jake Gyllenhaal?! Whyyyyyyyyyy!?)

I saw the first trailer and honestly, it just wasn't the story I knew, and I can't see it being a story anyone could love. I may just be dramatic and lame, but I don't see why, given the success of the show, you'd want to change something as original and creative as AtLA. Obviously, you have to take liberties in film since it's a different medium, but by losing the essence of the show, it's like you're writing a very bad dark!OOC-fanfic. :(

Nothing was wrong with Iron Man 2, (I actually loved it) but I meant I had to see the trailer, bleeeeech.

I can see why he's the Prince, as he actually looks like the character from the games, who didn't look persian to begin with. lol

They're idiots. Why was Firefly, Family Guy, Futurama, etc, on Fox canceled? Idiots, that's why. lol It's also pretty easy to write something for a different genre if you know what you're doing *couhgprinceofpersiawaswrittenbyjordanmechnercough*

Oh, that's good then! The trailer part is sigh-worthy, but I was sort of excited to see the film. I'm glad it passed the test.

Really? I guess in a way they look alike, but I just think Jake is not very attractive. Which is such a silly thing to get huffy over but really, he's not who I pictured at all (obviously, besides the whole "he's white" aspect of it). But if it's good I might give it a shot. I didn't know Mechner was actually writing the screenplay as well (??!) so I guess that's a bit better!

I don't think he's the hottest thing ever, but I also didn't think that of the Prince. XD

I had a very good source tell me that they read the script, and it was awesome and they weren't supposed to change much, if anything. :D :D :D

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think that there's a little bit too much conflation of race and culture, honestly. The fact that this is obviously heavily influenced by East Asia is obvious, as is the fact that many characters aren't supposed to be Caucasian.
However, considering natural human diversity, it makes sense that in the prehistory of the series different races could have developed, but that because of a different playout of history, the cultural distribution ended up different.
If you look at their world map, there's basically one huge "continent" (or several interconnected ones), and a lot of very large islands. Even if, like in our world, man had started evolving in a certain central area, they could have spread out and evolved separately for a while, creating racial diversity, before cultures intermingled the way we see on the show.

Actually, I find the geo-political distribution on the show completely bizarre. I mean the entire world divided essentially into 4 empires? And really, why isn't there just a bit more cultural diversity? /tangent

Anyway, though. The point I was trying to make is that there being some genetically Caucasian characters doesn't mean they didn't adapt to the dominating culture of the ATLA world.
