I don't get into the ship wars -- I'm not even actively into fandom -- but I just have to say . . .

Being mature in some ways =/= being mature in all ways.

Acting like an adult in most ways =/= actually being an adult.

You can be mature as hell when it comes to violence and taking care of yourself and living on your own, but that does not make you an adult and it does not necessarily mean that you are mature in the ways of sex.

I'll agree with you that Ed is mature in ways that most children/teens would never dream of being. But that doesn't mean that he's an adult, because he's not, and so the people that are squicked by the idea of an adult having sex with a child/teen are perfectly just in feeling that way, and of calling you out on it. Even if Ed was the one to initiate it, that does not make it right.

Honestly, I'm just not sure that Chris Hansen would agree with you or OoC!Roy on this issue. :/

It is if you count Ed as a child, and some people do. Pedophilia is sexual perversion in which children are the desired sexual object. Granted, to most shippers, Ed is the only one that Roy wants, but that hardly makes it okay. Even if it's just targeted pedophilia, it still is.

Granted, if you take the definition very literal, then since Ed is a teen it technically wouldn't be. But it's still sexual interactions with someone who is not an adult, and so at the very least it would be statutory rape each and every single time, and wrong in the eyes of many.

Regardless of what one may think of the power dynamics (which are different depending on where in the series the relationship would take place) it's not paedophilia since Ed is not prepubescent.

Also, depending on what the age of consent is, it may not be statutory rape either.

This is what kills me. Here 16 is the age of consent. So while it's totally fine to be squicked by the age difference or the power difference (although honestly? Ed certainly isn't prone to giving in to anyone just because they think they hold some power over him), it's not pedophilia OR statutory rape here for a 16 yo to have sex. In france it's 15 and even in some states in the US it's 16 so yeah, no, stop assuming that the insanely high age of consent here you live (18? 21?) is the norm.
