No one actually believes they're fucking. If they were, I wouldn't be in the fandom, because it would be shitty to their wives. It's using characters with the personas we're given second hand from interviews and making them fuck. I'm almost 100% sure that fandom!Gids is as far away from George Osborne as you can get, for example. If you don't like it, then don't ship? Write gen. I personally like that as much, if not more, than the hardcore porn.

That being said, it will have to be a very convincing argument that convinces me Alan Duncan hasn't had a go, or tried to get on, a few Tory bikes...

I think there's more in the closet (Take that how you will) than we suspect in reality, but yes; our fandom is nothing like their RL and I'm glad everyone knows it. TBF though, there have been a few - count-em-on-one-hand few - times that they've said things, made facial expressions, suggested images that are made more fun by imagining they're slashy.

Not my fandom but from what I can gather with RPS/RPF the vast majority of folks don't believe the people are fucking. They just see that they might possibly be fucking. They can go through the wall with the What if... They can comparmentalise the real people and the fictional representation. Of course there are people who think they are fucking but they are in the minority and are probably too busy building shrines and mapping their schedules and you stalking to write fic.

I can't write clameron fic because I think they're fugly. Doesn't stop me from reading it though.
