Well, Harry's sexual identity is beyond 'heterosexual' and into 'desperately I SWEAR TO GOD I'M straight'*. Some fans like it there.

*This doesn't mean he's closeted or anything. It just means his perceived sexuality is very important to him. Some people take having red hair or gray eyes really really seriously too.

I always read those "I love the smell of her hair, which was very female and flowery. And very female, which is why I love it, okay!?" parts as Butcher assuring himself and the readers of his heterosexuality. Same with the "call me a chauvinist, but..." mouthpiece parts.

If I were to assign these things to Harry, I probably wouldn't like him as much. Or at all. (This is probably weird, but I hope it at least makes sense.)

Really? I tend to think it's more Harry being an asshole than Butcher. I tend to think Butcher knows that Harry's not the most reliable narrator who ever narrated.

Then again, I also forgive Harry for some stuff because he got his brain screwed with at an early age. I tend to think the effects of Justin's mucking left him with the effective social skills of someone very very very functional and but still on the autism spectrum. He's not good at reading social situations, and he focuses on small details while basing other aspects of his life on tropes and cliches that he's read about. And he's so PROUD of his physics knowledge, he could go on and on and on about it...

(Blah blah blah thoughts on yaoi blah blah blah rice crispies.)

I do think Harry is an asshole (part of why I like him), but the misogyny-covered-as-chauvinism crap is just... so grating, and doesn't fit in with how I see Harry at all (equal opportunity asshole), which is probably why I'm happily assigning it away.

Thank you for your thoughts on yaoi, they gave me something to think about.

Harry is a jerk. The chauvinistic stuff (he doesn't HATE women, he just thinks that they're strange aliens that cannot be understood by humans-- kinda like Spider Robinson, in his way) does grate me pretty badly too. But if I make it part of Harry I can rationalize and analyze it. If I think it's Butcher, I just go :(.

I'm happier thinking that Harry's just a guy whose NEED to be male, hetero, able, and cis overrides the fact that he actually happens to be male, hetero, able, and cis. (...okay and some repressed attraction to men stop gaping at Michael's pecs Harry)

[identity profile] master-kogane.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about the instances of: "gosh, I'm so glad the baddie isn't a girl- I just wouldn't be able to hit her if it were the case (even if she were about to, say, rip out my jugular or something)!" or "I just can't get Murphy involved in this one, even though she's been involved in lots of messed up and dangerous situations already; I am the man and I must protect the helpless wimmin!", so misogyny was probably the wrong word. It's definitely not chauvinism, though, at least not in my book.

This is definitely a way too complex topic for me to sufficiently articulate when I'm almost half-asleep already. /rubs eyes
