Do not be ashamed, it has its moments. People who are IC are really good and pretty original.

I wish I could comment on IC-OOC behaviour, but I know so few of the canons...

It does seem to have a lot of background politics, but that's only an impression I'm getting as a complete outsider.

Oh, the background politics are involved. I've known players to get physically ill because of stuff that's going on behind the scenes. It isn't the end of the world to get crit, but people do get targeted by other players and the mods, I love them for the effort, I really do, can't stop it.

It's sad that outsiders are only getting that impression. I will admit it was fun at first, and I did have a good time for a while, and the majority of the players are great people. Of course, it only takes a few to change things around.
