What's wrong with getting off to written porn?

That said, I usually want fanfic for different reasons. There's lots and lots of genfic in fandom (I spent this week reading some awesome Supernatural/Criminal Minds crossovers), and even more fic with romantic relationships but no sex scenes. It's wanting more of the characters I love in situations I won't be able to see in the canon.

Why would people need to read any fiction or watch TV or movies, then?

There's an element of surprise when reading someone else's writing (smutty or otherwise, pro or fanfic) that you can't duplicate just by fantasizing. For me, that's part of the appeal of reading fanfic. I would guess it's the same for a lot of other people.

It irks me when people assume or suggest all fanfic is porn, I have read some good PG-ish fanfic.
And PG-ish fanfic is not even difficult to find.
And there is quite a bit of gen.

But yeah, I will defend people's write to read fanfic, including smut fanfic.
Even when I have not been reading it for awhile. Even though I am currently quite bored of smut.

(As for finding good fic (and good fic exists), rec lists are your friends. And it is amateur writing, a lot of it is bad. )
