*squints* Is that... Vampire Hunter D?

[identity profile] khaman.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my guess. I could bust out one of my artbooks and see, but I am just way too fuckin' lazy today.

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got one too, but I'm equally lazy.

[identity profile] isteillia.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
it is. It's from the first one where Rei uses his blades to cut the legs off her horse so she can't escape.

I'm not sure that I'd trust the opinion of somebody who found every single fic that she'd found in an entire fandom misogynist. I could be wrong, of course, but she just sounds very eager to look down on people.

[identity profile] pellimusprime.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Or that's her favorite word. Maybe she thinks it means "TOTES AWESOME" :D

[identity profile] vazavati.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
...that made me laugh out loud. xD It'd explain why it gets tossed the hell around with such abandon.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be too put out over being defriended by someone like that.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Post it. If she defriends you over it, she's a bitch who doesn't value friendship and you're better off without her. If she doesn't defriend you, then she cares about people more than she cares about bitching, and she's a good friend to keep. Problem solved.

I can really identify with you, OP. It's hard when you think you're going to be judged harshly by someone whose judgment you respect; even more so when you fear or suspect they'll perceive you as having committed some moral wrongness such as racism or misogyny.

I took a creative writing workshop, though, where the leader had an extremely interesting (and helpful) perspective on this. He said, "If you are critiquing someone else's work, and you tell them everything that's wrong with their work, and you're 100% correct but you do it in such a way that discourages that person from trying - they are not the ones who failed. You did." You are scared of the possibility that this person will judge you negatively, and that if they judge you, they will be right in doing so. But I would suggest you consider the possibility that they are already in the wrong themselves to some extent.

As for the possibility that they will punish you socially and this will limit your enjoyment of an already-too-small fandom: there's no denying that this is a possibility, and that it would suck for this to come true. The question then becomes, is that a good enough reason for you to never be allowed to put forth your own works?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-09 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it may well be more about me being neurotic than them being in the wrong, and I think it's legitimate to critique art based on how it addresses sexual politics or race or whatever. It's just that I've seen folks say a particular work is clearly misogynist and been surprised by that reaction, so I'm not always so sure my senses for this kind of thing are as fine-tuned as they could be.

The question then becomes, is that a good enough reason for you to never be allowed to put forth your own works?

That is a good question, and I guess I need to weigh what's most important to me in all this -- posting my work or not risking making waves. I do, of course, want to make my fic as non-offensive as possible, but there are no guarantees as to the reaction of others. (Which still doesn't absolve me of the need to try to the best of my abilities.)

Every fic she's read in one of her fandoms has been misogynistic? How many has she read?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-09 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I believe she said that every fic she's seen has been misogynist, so it's not clear to me that she's necessarily read all that many, but the ones she has read have not led her to think highly of the fandom as a whole.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2010-06-09 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
So... she considers her fanfics also misogynistic, right?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-09 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
No, she just thinks she's doing it well and they're doing it poorly and offensively, and she gets pretty heated about the ones who she thinks are doing it poorly and offensively. Which is fair. I'm just afraid that I'll end up in her "doing it poorly and offensively" category and on the receiving end of her derision.

[identity profile] vazavati.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
There are worse things to earn than the derision of someone whose attitude is "I'm right, & everyone else is wrong (& offensive!)"--I mean, sheesh, that sounds pretty arrogant to me. Screw what she thinks. Write what you think is good, OP~ ♥

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2010-06-09 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know you think she's being fair, but it sounds like she's being superior because (perhaps?) she's read a lot of books/articles. All I can tell you is to be aware of the issues facing men and women, but also to be aware of the society in which the characters live. Sometimes making the characters unmisogynistic or unsexist will change their characterizations significantly, so don't fall into that trap. If she doesn't like your fic because of what she sees as issues, perhaps you can ask her to help you in fixing them, if you still really and truly respect her opinion.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-09 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the Vampire Hunter D novel-verse is WHOA misogynistic in places. They're amazing stories, don't get me wrong, but I kind of have to wonder, "Is some chick going to get almost-raped or sexually abused by her family in EVERY ONE of these?" (Honestly, secret of my own, I'm complaining more about the plot repetition than the flat-out misogyny.) So, yeah, no wonder tbat attitude trickles into the fandom.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
She's full of herself. Read between the lines there, OP. Unless she's covered her ass with talk about how misogyny is socially reinforced and damned hard to get away from and specifically pointed herself out for it, then "Never read fanwork that's not misogynist" means "except for mine, of course".

Clearly, I don't know this person, so maybe there's something else going on here. But the fact of the matter is, yes, misogyny is all over the damned place, and writing a story without it is hard. A lot of people don't try, and a lot of people who do try end up failing. You seem aware that it's an issue, which is the first step, and more than a lot of people have.

I say post it, and if she de-friends you or pitches a fit, it's probably because she's an stuck-up ass and not because of anything you did.

I know at least one person in my fandom who is like that (icon related :\) and I would question opinion on misogyny if she said anything past, "it's bad, mmkay". If by some miracle Marvel is your fandom, then this is almost definitely the same person. Drop me a line and we can talk, if you like, but again—this person is full of it and not worth wasting the spoons on.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Not Marvel, but thank you for the offer. And I think you're right -- misogyny isn't nearly as easy to root out in oneself or one's work as she gives the impression of thinking.
