I have an idea. Let's throw the term "Mary Sue" around like we have no clue what it means.

Everyone wants to fuck Mal, therefore Mal = a Mary Sue.

While he might be a self-insert character (to some extent - I suspect all the male Serenity crewmembers are a bit self-insert-y for Joss), he's too flawed and, more to the point, too damn unlucky to be a Gary Stu.

Even if you were to argue that Mal is Joss' self-insert, self insert =/= Mary-Sue. Being awesome doesn't make you a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu. Even if a character is awesome AND is a Mary-Sue, there is no reason this needs to be a secret like it's some kind of ultimate insult. We should not need to go through this again, kids.

Although it's almost refreshing not to have a woman as the subject of this secret.

A self-insert does not a Mary Sue make, but IA that Mal is a bit selfinserty.

Aw, I didn't know that! But it does make sense to me. I sorta figured he was projecting himself onto Xander, at least, rather than Angel or Spike. Ooh, and definitely Andrew XD

Joss admitted that Wash, Xander and Topher were all self inserts... I wish I had the link to the article where I read that. Sadly it is lost to me. It might have been on TVtropes... I can't remember.

And those are some of his most entertaining characters. I think that says a lot, mainly that the guy doesn't ever see himself as a Gary-Stu-level of perfect and nor does he want to be.

Oh yes. <3 There's this hilarious interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01zt9bADbCg) on the Dollhouse s1 DVD where they asked various cast/crew members if they thought the Dollhouse was real, and if so, who was a Doll. Fran said Joss HAD to be a Doll, to which Joss replied, "If I am a Doll, clearly the technology has not been perfected."

Everyone knows that Joss' mary sues are the adolescent girls who can kick a seasoned fighter's ass with no training at all. sheesh, people.

Some days, I wish the terms "Mary-Sue" and the even more idiotic-sounding "Gary-Stu," had never been invented.

...Just saying. Mainly because I find them annoying and as exemplified here, over-used.

Half the time when I hear Canon Sue complaints without any convincing back up evidence I read it as "b'aw I dun like them"
