I think Isabella was always up in the top ten before Twilight, but it jumped ahead after the books/movies became popular. It's a shame, because that is one of my favorite names and now it's got such a horrible connotation.

[identity profile] ezmoed.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This, omg. I have a niece named Isabella and EVERYONE assumes it's because of Twilight. In reality, it was the name of my sister-in-law's grandmother. OTL

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I love that name, it's in my top five for girls. Bah.

Yeah, Isabella (and Isabelle/Isabel/Isobel, but especially Isabella) started getting popular again back in the 90s.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was a popular name beforehand, probably why SMeyer chose it actually. In college a woman in one of my classes had a baby and named it Isabella, and that was in 2004 before those books came out

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
If I were going to have kids and wanted to choose the name I would anyway. I mean who cares. I highly doubt Twilight is going to be such a big deal in another ten years.

and one character does not ruin a name.

There have always been naming trends. I don't think being in touch with the latest styles in baby names makes somebody a moron. I mean, it kind of stinks to always be one of four Jennifers or Madisons in every school year; but it also stinks to have a difficult or unpronounceable name that lands you with a stupid nickname that lasts from the first grade to high school graduation (...hypothetically).

What I'm saying is, I don't think it's necessary to build a time machine in order to berate the parents of every little girl who was ever named after Shirley Temple or Wendy Darling.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
IA so hard. Grow a brain - nobody is going to care about current celebrities or fads by the time your kid is old enough to wonder what his/her name means. And partially because I think "Isabella" is an awful name. It's just so ew... ISABELLA!!! GET IT??? SHE'S A BELLA!!! BELLA MEANS BEAUTIFUL IN SOME LANGUAGE I CAN'T SPEAK!!!

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)

I kind of shake my head at people who give their kids extremely popular/common names regardless of the reason for the name's popularity. They're boring.

I just hope the "unique spelling/extra letters" trend is done. Isabella? Pretty name. Izzahbehla? No so much.

I still think Shiloh is a dog's name. I mean, there's the book series, which I named my dog after eleven years ago, and . . . yeah . . . to me, it'd be like if she'd named her child Spot. :/ I realize that's just me being stupid, but yeah.

[identity profile] simplefaith08.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know, you can name your kid a certain way without being a huge fan. A name gaining exposure means more people will hear of it, and go "Huh, that's a nice name." People who have only vaguely heard of Twilight can think "Isabella is pretty, how about that?" because conversation brought it to the forefront. I don't get why it's a problem, especially for relatively harmless names...

On the other hand... you have more fingers.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I had to go back before replying to this one because it looked like a wall of text and I skipped it the first time. (I'm lazy.)

I kind of agree, but on the other hand, I used to work at a school where there was a second-grader named Maximus. He was born (conceived? gestated?) around the time that "Gladiator" came out, so the origins of his name were not a mystery. I just kept mulling over his name in my mind.

"Maximus..."

"Maximus..."

"Maximus... What a freaking awesome name!"

His last name was something very, very mundane that I can't remember. Gomez or Gonzalez or Martinez or somesuch.

But still...

"MAXIMUS!"

I mean, just SAY it. I puts hair on your chest and makes your beard grow just by pronouncing the syllables! It helps that it means "the greatest" in Latin, too. You can't get much more awesome than that, unless your name is something like Staff Seargent Max Fightmaster (http://www.cracked.com/funny-2592-staff-sgt.-max-fightmaster/) or something along those lines (http://www.cracked.com/article_14982_9-manliest-names-in-world.html).

I judge anyone who names their kid after a Twilight character.

Well, I was named after a movie/book character but it's a pretty name on its own right.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Why do care at all, let alone when the name has an existence outside and a history before the fiction/celebrity? Like it's so much more stupid for someone to read Twilight and like the name Isabella than it is for someone to pick Isabella out of a baby name book or use it because it was her great aunt's name. It's a name. It exists outside Twilight. If you're concerned about people naming their kid Espn, fine, I'm on board with that, but otherwise, chill.

[identity profile] lady-lilith.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
There is a HUUUUUUUGE difference between naming your child after a book/movie/celebrity/etc and hearing their name and going "huh, I like that!" and naming your child thusly.

I was given a name my mother heard on the soaps. She didn't name me after her, she just liked the name and stole it from the show.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it is less a case people actually naming their babies based on media crazes and people being slightly swayed by them.

Maddox could gain in popularity because few people new the name even existed before Angelina Jolie's child.
Isabella if a popular name in general.
If a name has bad connotations someone will probably not want to name their child that name. Thus, being swayed away from Lindsay.

[identity profile] sakurabatou.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more pissed that whenever I introduce myself now people ask if they can call me "Bella". I despised that nickname growing up, and Twilight made me despise it even more. :|

But, well, nothing is worse than naming your baby Sephiroth.

[identity profile] linake.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, my name's Lindsay :( I love my name, and it saddens me when people make any mention of Lindsay Lohan when I introduce myself.

Of course I just laugh it off, but deep down I want to shout for the sake of Lindsays everywhere "DAMN YOU, LINDSAY LOHAN!" and shake my fist in the air.
