I don't 'ship them but really? Are you forgetting about all the other married/engaged people Hawkeye screwed around with?

And while he only cheated once, BJ was tempted a second time. Do I think it's possible he'd do it again? Depends on the circumstances. It wouldn't be all rainbows and kittens but with amount they drink on that show I could see him doing something he wouldn't completely sober.

It's not so much about Hawkeye's reaction to cheating in general, but based on his reaction to how completely distressed BJ was about cheating on Peg just the once.

I agree. Hawkeye is too much of a womanizer and BJ is really loyal to Peg. I remember one episode where BJ kissed a nurse that was going through marital trouble and it was just tearing him up inside.

I think the episode named 'Hanky'. There's a nurse who's having marital problems, and she and BJ are drinking together and they hook up. He was completely distraught about it, and wanted to tell Peg, but Hawkeye stopped him (he said that telling her would only be a way of spreading his guilt across more people, and that if he was never going to do it again, then it was better for Peg not to know)

So much THIS. I don't ship Hawkeye/B. J. (really never cared about their love lives one jot - I was more a Margaret/Charles girl, personally,) but I'd read fic if it sounded interesting. If I only read fic that I thought would or could happen, I'd be left with a lot of time on my hands.

I always shipped them (when I was a kid, before I had any real concept of romantic relationships), and yet I was so upset when BJ cheated on Peg. But I still wanted Hawkeye and BJ to be together forever.

...Yeah, I dunno, it kinda makes sense in my head.

I don't ship them because it's MASH and it's so perfect on it's own I couldn't imagine changing a thing.

But I don't think shipping necessarily means sex. Shippers could just have them pinning after each other, but never be together because BJ loves his wife more or what have you. I'm just saying there are a billion and half scenarios to 'ship' and some of them could still be relatively in character.

I think it's very OOC too, but there are talented writers who can handle it well by considering the nature of warfare and conveying the characters' subsequent emotions with respect to their personalities. I have a hard time believing any author could convincingly write "BJ leaves Peg for Hawkeye" for me, but "BJ and Hawkeye find comfort with each other during the war, and have to face the aftermath" could work.

Despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I wrote War-era H/BJ fic (a thousand years ago, when I was young--MASH was my first fandom--and I Mary-Sue'd everyone into unrecognizability anyway)...

This. Exactly this. I'm sure there are one or two writers who could convince me of it, but considering there are one or two writers who can convince me that invisibility is real, that's not saying much. And, in my case, I think it's even more the fact that I can't see Hawkeye being party to than that I can't see BJ doing it. Because I think they're both weak sometimes, as all people are, but they seem to have a pretty good handle on protecting each other, if not themselves. So...yeah.
