Sounds like someone is very green with envy.
And no, for the record, I don't have any of those fancy-schmancy markers.

Boy do I know where you're coming from, OP.
This is the same as the people on my flist who produce shitty art and then run out to buy a Wacom tablet.
Yes, I'm jealous. But really, people need to learn the basics before buying all the high-end stuff to compliment the hobby. It's not going to magically make you better.

Yeah, I am spoiled. But I have no idea why that's so negative as you're making it out to be.

My parents are fine with spending money on me. I didn't pressure them to buy it, they asked and I said I'd like to learn how to use them. After I showed them what I could accomplish and how I'd use them to advance my skills, they agreed to buy them.
:/ I don't see what's so bad about this situation really, they have MARKERS so you're angry?
Get over your jealousy, because jealousy has no place it art just like these ~ELITIST 14 YEAR OLDS~ have no place in the art world in your mind.

People like you, who don't support younger artists and shit on them for personal reasons, are what is wrong in this world sometimes. :/
You wanna help the situation? Try helping improve their set of skills and making better choice to advance in the world of art.
Stop making the situation worse. :]

WITH THE RIGHT PEN, ANYONE CAN BE AN AMAZING ARTIST.

Srsly tho, yes they might have fancy pens - but if your art is better any way, surely they're the ones who should be jealous? It's really not what you have, but how you use it.

I feel you, OP, I feel you. I sometimes want to shout at them to stick with cheap colored pencils, but then I have to facepalm at myself because I realize it's of no matter really - if they have the money to spend it on this kind of thing, why not buy it?

...I'd just like some too. :D

[identity profile] cpuff94.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree. i know i shouldn't be jealous but...ugh

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I keep a single black copic ($4) among my other cheaper markers. Drawing is a casual hobby for me. Not something I'm gonna make my parents spend $50+ on.

I play music, so to me it's like seeing a kid get a really expensive guitar without the long-term interest to deserve one.

no seriously just because they bought markers doesn't mean there are less in the world for you to buy or something. if the want to spend money on it, they will. calm the fuck down.

I understand where you are coming from. Especially because I don't see the point in wasting money on designer markers. I like my prismacolors :)

While I do sympathize, you have to keep in mind that art is more about execution than resources. I've seen some shitty oil paintings, and I've seen some magnificent drawings done on computer paper with a ballpoint pen. While there are a lot of dopey teenagers who will say "WOW! Copics! Instant deviant art fave!!", most people aren't like that :P

[identity profile] goblin-dae.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You know that you can love and be dedicated to art while still kinda sucking at it, right? And that there is no magical level of "good" you have to reach before you are worthy of using higher quality materials.

(*Ding* You are now Level 23! You are now known as a Super Sketcher! Now you can buy: Prismacolours, Putty Eraser!)

I kind of get where you're coming from, OP. I worked for over ten years to get where I am today in the video game design industry (I'm currently 21). I had a friend in school who was one of those types who saw what someone else had/wanted, and immediately went and demanded the same but better off her parents. And of course, they bought it without question.

Her parents bought her all the best art equipment, paid for her all of her college and university courses, all of her living expenses including food and bills while she was living in student accommodation. She had everything handed to her on a plate.

Her art is mediocre at best, and she has zero knowledge of anatomy. Her parents, naturally, believe that every little piece of shit she produces should be worth more than the Mona Lisa. Her results in college and uni reflected her lack of talent. She threw petty, childish tantrums about how nobody understood how amazing her art was and she "deserved better", her parents continued to pour their money into her to support her "talent" by buying her more and more expensive art materials, top-of-the-range Wacom tablets, the best art software, etc. etc.

And she immediately gets bored of it and decides to do something else.

I have never been so frustrated with anyone in my life.

Yeah...I feel this way too. It's even worse to see crappy digital art, click it, then read in the description that they have a brand new Wacom tablet (I don't mean testing out their tablet for the first time, I mean, they aren't good artists and their gallery shows it).

I have the cool-grayscale Copics and I wish I could get more...but art is expensive and I can't afford it. My 10+ years-old Wacom tablet and art pencils were donated to me...that's how cheap I am. Poor people should be able to afford art too!

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Priorities.

Some of us would rather spend our wage on markers, it's not like we were robbing your set or anything.

[identity profile] kookaburra1701.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I always feel sorry for them - struggling with student-grade materials was where I made the most improvements. When I finally sprung for top of the line oil paints after finishing my art degree, it was like someone waved a magic wand over my art and said "THOU SHALT ROCK NOW". I feel sad that they won't have that incredible moment in their artistic journey.

I actually get this. Not about markers specifically, but I've always wanted to be that spoiled fourteen-year-old who got anything she wanted even if she'd get bored with it within the month. Instead I've always been that person who's had to keep herself from trying things just in case they were a waste of money. So, yes, on my part? All jealousy. I think it's great and enviable that they get to try their hand at things with good material.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand where you're coming from, OP. The kicker is I used to be one of those kids - the 14-year-old whose parents bought them a set, that is. Even having been there and knowing there's more to it than that*, I still get the irrational (AND I KNOW IT'S IRRATIONAL, I KNOW I'M BEING JUDGMENTAL AND I FEEL SUPER GUILTY ABOUT IT AFTER THE INITIAL THOUGHT PROCESS!) bitterness when I see that.

* I've only ever done art, that's been my thing since I was old enough to have a 'thing'. I was quite spoiled because I had a single working mother and was an only child and she felt bad for me being alone all the time because she worked 50+ hours a week to prove she was just as capable of supporting a kid and having them grow up as privileged as those that grew up in two-parent households. I saved up my allowance to build my set up, and when my massive set got stolen I've started putting aside money to build it back up to its former glory from my job where I am working my ass off and supporting myself.
