You improve by doing. Just ask people if you can color their sketches. Many artists you find would be happy to let you, even if it doesn't turn out to be the BEST COLORING EVAH. We understand the work it takes to get there!

2nding this.

It's very rude to copy line-art, colour it and then post the pic without first asking for permission, especially if you don't even give credit to the original artist.

I can't really speak for mangaka, but I bet if you ask internet artists for crits on their stuff that you've colored, it might help! Although you say you're embarrassed by things like your lack of light sources, I actually see that as a good sign; you're obviously aware of the elements that can help make an image dramatic, and you just don't know how to implement them. Perhaps you can find an artist willing to mentor you. :D

(And seriously, don't get discouraged. I had a very accomplished professor that was fond of saying that EVERY piece goes through an ugly phase. You just have to grit your teeth and keep trying new things!)

I'd ask the artists if possible. Most tend to be rather flattered you like their lines enough to color them, and if you get permission and give credit, it won't be a problem at all. Only assholes would be a dick about your colors being at a beginner level, most are just going to appreciate the fact you're making an effort to learn and liked their stuff enough to utilize it.

NOT asking runs you the risk of them being mean towards you though. A lot of people dislike finding someone just went and usurped their work without asking (technically it's stealing, not giving credit is even worse), and in those cases might start insulting you and your work.

You fishin' for compliments, OP? Because your coloring looks pretty darn good to me. Needs some work, yeah, but definitely quality.
...And are those by any chance some Nordics? I can never quite tell.

Personally, I get a little bit annoyed whenever I see someone recolor another person's lineart, even with permission. Without permission, you just come off as a jerk. Sorry. Never cared for recoloring either. Sure, it gives you a way to improve your coloring but by the time you have to actually make your own lineart, you might not know how to do it that well. As for your coloring, I feel like the background's colors are too desaturated in comparison with the foreground and shading feels too fuzzy and almost nonexistent for me, personally.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
That is silly.

You only have one thing to be ashamed of, and that's not crediting the original artists or seeking their permission. Why don't you go rectify that situation right now? I'll wait.

You seem like a fine artist (from my lay perspective). Maybe once you get a little exposure and realize that most people are supportive, you'll feel better about your work.

She's called K, and is a Japanese doujinshi-artist. The text in the bottom of the picture is kind of hard (read: damn near impossible) to see but it says "Kさん、本当にごめんなさい。" ... Not that it counts as crediting... I'm sorry.

I usually don't post what I do so I kind of forgot... I might show a friend to ask for concrit but I never post coloured fanart anywhere. I just keep it in a folder on my computer. And I'd never claim that I did the original line-art.

As long as you don't try to pass it off as your own work, what's the problem?

I love to collect scans of model sheets and animation drawings and color them myself from time to time

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you should credit the original artist if you want to use their linework, and especially if you post it anywhere. I'm sure you know that hehe.

If they want to see it though, just talk with them online or take a screen cap to show them.

What knowledge you're lacking is about light and colour. What you have there is fine but if you want to push it further, I could help you. =) But really, I think you're doing pretty well. You should have more confidence in yourself.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
YES, ASK. CREDIT.
That said, I'd be honoured if someone like you wanted to colour my linearts.
