I'm not sure but it could be because American football evolved from rugby football, so the name just never went away

Yeah, I suppose that's the reason, but it's just weird that during all those years nobody said "um, guys, wouldn't it make more sense to call this game 'American rugby' or something?"

I mean, even rugby football is called just rugby 99% of the time.
