This is one of the reasons I parted ways with Christianity. I find it exceptionally hard to believe that God would let a good person burn in hell because they don't believe. What kind of God is that? Especially when he's supposed to be about loving and caring for the sake of loving and caring and not to get something in return?

God asks that we do our best to follow His word. It's not that much to ask so if someone can't even try, then they will spend eternity suffering without His light.

...and it's not just enough to do the good things and follow generic Christian principles of being a kind and caring human being? It's not like she's a bad person. She doesn't kick puppies and spit on poor people. She's not unkind, and in fact is fairly generous in spirit and deed. She does good things for people without expecting anything in return. That's a lot more than a whole lot of so-called christians. But because she doesn't attribute this that or the other to an all powerful being, she gets to rot in hell. That's the part I don't understand, and never will. I was a cradle Catholic, and I'm converting to Judaism. Which allows that good people of any or no faith have a place in heaven.

Wow, I didn't know that! It's pretty cool, makes me feel better about my atheist ass. I'm glad you found your religion, anyway.

FWIW, not all Christians believe (as the OP apparently does) that you have to believe in God as a being in order to be saved.

That's the true point of the Parable of the Good Samaritan: the two who are of the "right" religion, but neglect the person in trouble, are contrasted with the person of the "wrong" religion (the Samaritans were polytheists) who obeys the commandment of "Love thy neighbor," and it's those of the "right" religion who are found wanting.

If God can look favorably on a polytheist I don't see why an atheist would give Him any trouble.

The different between Samaritans and the injured person had more to do with class than religion. Samaritans were the Jews who the Babylonians did not force into exile, mostly because they were politically irrelevant. There was a lot of tension between the exiled Jews and the Samaritans because of this. It was a story about classes not religion.

FWIW, there are many denominations of Christianity that do not hold to the belief that if a person doesn't believe the way you do, or at all, they are going to hell. This secret really bothers me in part because of that.

It also bugs me because there's no *good* reason why two people like Booth and Bones can't be together just because one is an atheist and the other a Catholic.

I've seen couples like that irl, so why couldn't it be so in fiction? Argh.
