I don't get it either. I though I hated sports in general until I started watching it. I think most Americans don't like it because a) it's foreign, b) the clock doesn't stop every five minutes for commercials, c) low scores (who cares?) and some games can end in draws, d) guys kicking a ball around and not using their hands (doesn't that make it more challenging since men tend to have poor lower body strength compared to in the upper body?)

One thing I get really tired of is people calling it gay, because it's homophobic and how the fuck can a sport be gay? If they mean male - male contact, there's more contact in American football than in soccer

I can explain this! And you're alllllll completely downright wrong! Yay American sports history fan!

Americans were the first people to play something called Football outside of the UK when the Oneida Football Club was founded in 1862, but the Civil War was happening and all records are lost forever to time (We don't know if they were playing American Gridiron Football or Association Football, for example. Theory is that it was some sort of crazy hybrid where you kicked a ball but could pick it up and run with it called "The Boston Game", that nobody knows how to play today, but was popular at the time). They were the first team to have a regular roster and play planned games. The theory is that they were Bostonian elite magnet public school kids from places like the Boston Latin School, playing something new and from "Europe" (By which, I refer to idea mystical magical rich Europe, and not the real thing where people live.).

The first intercollegiate game between universities was Princeton vs. Rutgers in 1869. They played soccer according to FA rules (Rutgers won, 6-4). This started a rash of soccer competitions between Universities, but they quickly changed that to Rugby and later American Football. Nobody knows why, exactly this is the case. There's no rhyme or reason for it. It just is. My theory is that people thought that more violence was considered more manly. Early attempts at making soccer an institution involved the word Football: the American Football Association (founded in 1884), the American Amateur Football Association (founded in 1893), the American League of Professional Football (founded in 1894), the National Association Foot Ball League (founded in 1895), and the Southern New England Football League (founded in 1914) all have Football in their names. The United States Soccer Federation was founded as The United States Football Federation, and they added the word Soccer in 1945, becoming the United States Soccer Football Federation. Football was dropped from the name in 1974.

It's worth noting as an aside that the 1902 National Football League (that is the one that played soccer, they have nothing to do with today's NFL) was founded by Baseball players because AL's Athletics got several of the NL's Phillies from their contracts with the Phillies, so the people involved got pissed and started a soccer league. I'm serious.

There was once a time not so long ago (read: 1920's) when soccer was pretty damn popular, and had tons of regional leagues that were starting to merge to become one big league at the time (This is how every sport group starts, btw, even MLB has the American League and the National League). It really took off, but the leagues thought the prosperity of the 1920's would last forever. It, of course didn't, and all the leagues folded.

The fact that most soccer leagues had a hard time staying open due to money issues, led in by the fact that after the 1930's they had to compete with the much stronger NFL and the gigantic powerhouse that is MLB didn't help them fill the stands, which helped them flounder quickly. Few people remember the United Soccer Association and the National Professional Soccer League, and maybe a couple more remember their successor North American Soccer League (This would be the sixties).

Indoor soccer was surprisingly popular for a while, but once again, leagues kept folding because they weren't growing organically (that is, trying to cover a whole nation that is tied with China for third largest nation in the world, instead of making regional groups of teams that allow fans to see more of the games, then merging those groups together and dropping the floundering teams). MLS has this same problem: Fans can't always go see their favorite teams because of timezones (Games for the Seattle Sounders that start at 6PM in PST start at 9PM in EST, for example. This is problematic for people watching games at home.), distance to travel and the cost of traveling, etc. American casual soccer fans also view going to see a losing team live as a waste of money, so unless you develop a ton of diehards, your losing teams tend to do poorly financially. The amount of Chicago Cubs diehards make the Chicago Cubs stay around despite winning not a single World Series/October Classic/Fall Classic/The Series (Techincally, it's the October Classic for over 100 years).

Also, it's worth noting that European Leagues? Steal all the good players away from US teams, because they have more money because soccer is more popular and gets more endorsement dollars. I don't blame the players, but all the same, it's a problem. Most people that follow soccer in the USA casually would look at the US National Team and think to themselves "Who the fuck are these people I have never seen before in my life?". Kids that are more athletic are pushed towards sports that have serious bankrolls to pay their athletes than those that don't (How many UK kids are pushed to play Baseball for the UK leagues? Answer: Not a lot, even though Britain won the first Baseball World Cup over the USA, but then again, those are historically amateur players).

Another problem is how shit the leagues are at advertising, but once again. Money.

Another problem is that Baseball runs from March to October, and Football runs during the winter. Crazy sports fans have a lot on their plate,

Women's Soccer has far less of these problems and is also far more popular than male soccer, partially because they won the Women's World Cup and everybody loves a winner. Also, women have less professional sport opportunities, and soccer is the big one along with the WNBA, so they have more money to pay the players.

TL, DR!

TL,DR: Money makes the world go round. Lack of long standing leagues with devoted fans and tons of money make European Leagues more attractive to American Soccer players who play at a professional level needed to be amazing. Male children that look like they could be professional soccer players are pushed into Baseball, Basketball, and American Football, because they have a lot more money to pay athlete salaries. That combined with poor World Cup performance from players that Casual fans wouldn't recognize, make soccer less attractive compared to NFL, NBA, and MLB. These sports have a stronger backing based on the fact that they've been around longer and have had the time to develop diehard fans, and they take up much of the calendar. Ta-da, lack of support for soccer.
