ngl, OP, whether or not ALW is being a royal cock about this, those who are trying to cause the musical to fail through techniques such as leaflet campaigns do not come off as much better. Why on Earth can't you just ignore the existence of the sequel? It certainly isn't as if anyone is breaking down your door and threatening to torch your shelves of Phantom memorabilia, merchandise and fanwork if you do not toe the Party line on whether the sequel is canon. It certainly isn't as if yours was the first fandom which had to deal with an unworthy addition to the canon.

Since you invoked the concept of authors' "moral rights" that is alive in some European nations, I feel it only appropriate that I share in turn my feelings about the whole "moral rights" doctrine: creepy. Culture is a conversation, my friend, and the specter of invoking "moral rights" in order to quash adaptations and derivatives of which the original author would not have approved strikes me as being similar to one who stands up in the middle of a conversation, puts forth heated views at length, and before yielding the floor, announces "If you agree with my views, you may quote me directly; if you disagree with me, however, you may only allude to what I have said." (Not to mention that if the heirs of Gaston Laroux really cared so much about blocking derivative works not true to the spirit of their ancestor's work... one really thinks they might have started with the musical itself, the work that first portrayed the Phantom as a romantic hero in the first place.)

Whatever people think of LND, I'm not personally invested in or affected by. In fact, I understand a lot of folks distaste. However, I do not get the the active hate. It's one thing to complain amongst your friends or rant in your journal, but campaigns? passing out leaflets? basically politicizing a musical? And people think poorly of me for liking it.
