They both did ugly things.

I agree.

Roslin STOLE SHARON'S FUCKING BABY, LIED TO HER AND HER HUSBAND AND TRIED TO HIDE HER IN THE FLEET

She also banned abortion

And refused to compromise any of her decisions and basically ruled the fleet with an iron fist, the only one who bothered to challenge her on anything was Adama and even he eventually capitulated with her plans to pursue Earth, based on fucking scripture of all things. I mean, think about that outside of the context of the show for a minute.

I hate how people want to ignore her faults because she is female and a leader. She did some things that were morally unjust, like almost every character in this show

However, she also did some amazing things. She SAVED Sharon's child (a debatable topic, but at the end of the day, D'anna was after Hera), found the map to Earth, kept the fleet together, and the most important thing: she convinced Adama not to abandon them all, thus saving the human race. So, it's an interesting dichotomy.

Well yeah, and I actually like her character (and Adama), but I hate how all her fans act like she is the greatest female character ever, ignore all of her major flaws, and get upset anytime she is portrayed as being weak in any way.

It is true that she was the reason humanity eventually found Earth ("new" Earth, LOL) and settled on a new homeworld, but you could make the argument that it was all chance (unless you buy the Divine Plan theory, which I actually do). Also, if you think about it, she was a religious nutcase. I mean, think about how people would react if an actual political leader started making decisions based on ancient religious texts.

How do people ignore her faults because she's a female leader?

One of the things that made her such a strong character was that she was flawed. If she'd been PERFECT, she wouldn't have had an effect on so many people.

You can still strongly disagree with where they ended up taking her character in the end, fading her into the background to become "The Admiral's Girlfriend" was not cool IMO.

Maybe it's not so much that they ignore her flaws, but they accept her flaws and not those of other characters.

TBH I don't hate any of the characters in the show besides maybe Chief Tyrol and Lee Adama (and I don't really hate Lee, he just annoys the ever loving shit out of me). So I have a hard time with this fandom since everyone always tries to justify their extreme hatred of one character or another based on the things that they've done all while adoring another equally flawed character who has also made questionable moral judgments.

ETA: When it comes to Roslin "fading in the background," I think part of the reason for that was that her entire motivation throughout the series was to find Earth, and after they found it and it was destroyed, I don't see how she had a clear motivation to do much of anything after that. The fleet was falling apart on top of that, and she was dying of cancer, so there wasn't much left for her to do. I didn't see Adama as a particularly strong personality at that point, either. His crew was beginning to mistrust him and there was the entire mutiny plot.

Personally? I don't hate Adama. I didn't like the relationship between the two of them in 4.5, and it had very little to do with his moral judgments and more to do with his self-pity.

I'm not a Lee fan.

The fading into the background thing bothered me, though. Even more, her death bothered me in a big way. I wanted her death to be a big deal since she had meant so much to the fleet. I HATED that it got lumped in with the loose-ends in the last hour of the show. I wanted it to be somewhere along the lines of the Buffy episode, The Body, in which we were able to see how one death affected everyone around. I felt seriously let down.

What was amazing for her as a character is that the writers allowed a woman to have those scary morally-ambiguous traits. And really let her have them -- do we see her expressing regret about her decisions after the Olympic Carrier? HELL NO. And society expects women to be the "moral" ones or the "emotional" ones. AND I FUCKING LOVED THAT. Laura Roslin had agency -- she acted upon events. She created events. AND IT WAS AMAZING.

And then -- as you pointed out -- narrative FAIL. FAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIL. Instead of letting her hang around and have all the manly men make all the decisions for her. They gave us fucking FANFIC where she got high (by smoking WHILE ON OXYGEN) and admitted her life was nothing until she looooooooooved Adama.

Whatever. They might as well have killed her off way before the end if that was the shit I was going to sit through.

ITA with her being an amazing character because of those flaws. I just don't understand how someone could love a flawed female character and then hate a male character because of all his flaws. I love them both and I don't see why one should be judged more harshly than the other, that's all

admitted her life was nothing until she looooooooooved Adama

That was stupid. I don't mind her emotional dependence on Adama so much, because I can relate to that and see it as realistic, but to have her make a statement like that is pretty fucking unacceptable, not to mention OOC
