This secret depresses me because I remember seeing this episode when it aired, and to me Homer was always a baby boomer -- now apparently they've fucked up the continuity all to hell because there was some episode where he had a grunge band in high school or something? WTF Simpsons, way to contradict yourself

Also, I taped this episode when it aired because the Smashing Pumpkins were on it

The continuity was fucked up all to hell--they make jokes about it. Like how Bart was born clearly in 1980, then Lisa was born 2 years later in 1984, and then Bart started kindergarten 3 years later in 1990 etc.

It's not so much a retcon as it's a flexible timeline. They keep moving things up as the show gets older. (And shittier, but that's beside the point. Or maybe it is the point.)

I graduated high school in 1990 and I remember classic rock being plenty big for us. The Kinks, The Doors, and Aerosmith were particularly well-represented... (Of course, now I'm feeling old, thinking of other bands that are considered "classic rock" now and realizing that, back then, they were just starting to get solid names...)

The thing that pissed me off most about that episode was having Bart bashing "dinosaur rock" when a season earlier he tricked the entire church into singing "Inna Gadda Da Vida". That and the fact that Bart is my favorite character, and I was almost 10 myself then and yet in that episode they made his views on music the opposite of mine... yeah.

On the other hand, that episode introduced me to The Smashing Pumpkins, so I can't totally hate it. :)
