Ehn, idk. The pairing struck me as predictable and boring for the first half of the show, and by the second half it seemed like, well, Xander was sort of an idiot and a Nice Guy (though he's my hands-down favorite character of the show and I fangirl him like CRAZY) and Buffy was sort of a rage-filled crazy chick, so if they got together it would have been nearly as dysfunctional as Buffy/Spike but not nearly as entertaining to watch.

I always thought they should have pushed the family/sibling feel of their relationship to the forefront, but they really missed an opportunity once Dawn showed up. Xander could have taken the caretaker place of Giles for a while, too, but he was off ruining a good thing with Anya. Ah, the tragedy of a Whedon show!

Eh, pretty much this. Though I seem to like it in fic, and can see it a lot better in Buffy Season 8 than on the actual show.

Also, lol@your icon. I once read a fic where Jack & Thor flew off into the sunset (as it were) after tricking Daniel into having Jack's illegitimate ass!baby. Oh, it was epic.

what. WHAT! LINK THIS TO ME NOW. I missed the boat on the majority of SG-1 fandom and refuse to touch the SGA & SGU people with a ten foot pole, so, while I've found a lot of high quality crack just spelunking around, I know I've missed most of the real gems.

As for Jack/Thor, it's sort of a joke but I sort of *do* ship it. You know, if Thor were a hot chick or Jack were a grey asexual alien. :D This is SG-1! We can make anything happen.

IF I HAD TO WRITE THE FINAL BUFFY STORY, I WOULD... I’m f---ing ready to write it tomorrow, are you kidding ? I always thought it would be kind of poignant to just have Buffy and [her friend] Xander be the last two people left, and have them reminisce about high school. The point being that, while you’re going through high school, it seems like hell, but once you’re old you begin looking at high school like it used to be paradise. So maybe that’s a Buffy reveal : When Xander asks Buffy what heaven was like, she says, “Like high school, just with you and my friends.” That’s lovely, right ? Like all of my stories, it’s two old people talking. [Laughs]

Also, I agree with a few other posters in that I didn't think Xander and Buffy were right for each other - then again, Buffy and a bunch of other potential partners weren't right for each other, LOL :P - and I can't really see them working in a reciprocal, romantic relationship later down the line. I guess if I read a really well-written fic that slowly developed both characters to the point where they could give things a try post-series, I could like it, but for the most part, I still prefer the separate canon ships to Xander/Buffy.

What's unsettling about the ship for me is that, right from the get-go, Xander was like "Can I have you?" to her, and there have been little scenes interspersed throughout the series that kind of depicted him as feeling like he had some claim on Buffy, and he disapproved of pretty much all her relationships. I understand that he got frustrated with her a lot and he did have reason to sometimes, but I still can't get over how much of a dick he was to her in "Dead Man's Party" - then again, everyone was getting on her case, but I distinctly remember being pissed off at Xander the most in that ep. I love that his "Kick his ass" lie was brought up in "Selfless", although it was waved away really quickly, and while I do think Xander and Buffy had an awesome friendship and clearly cared deeply about each other, it still seemed like Xander loved Buffy in a selfish kind of way until he moved on to Anya, whom I think was a much better fit for him in the end. However, I can see why you'd think otherwise, OP, so go on with your shipping self!

tl;dr I see Buffy and Xander as great platonic soulmates, but I still can't really see them as being in a loving, romantic, and long-term relationship.

I think Xander's the only guy who won't put up with Buffy's shit, so in that sense, I think they'd work. And he wouldn't go for that "coddle" B.S. that Buffy did to Riley once he was off the Initiative juice.

I'm not sure how Buffy would be good for him beyond the fact that he's into strong chicks...

I always felt bad for Xander. He was friend zoned from the start. Then Angel came along and he had no chance. :( I strongly believe that he settled for Anya. And is it just me but she kinda looks like Buffy too...
