I hate the casting, but I love the costumes and am actually kind of interested to see this "darker" take on it. So yeah, I'm also kind of excited.

Race issues aside? Dave Patel is a great actor. I've been a big fan of Aasif Mandvi in the Daily Show (although I know he won't be funny, intentionally.) I didn't know much about the kid playing Sokka, and had my reservations because of Twilight, but after watching a clip of him on You Tube on some crime drama who's name escapes me now... I was impressed.

Even if I wasn't against it for the race issues, I'd be against because Jackson Rathborne looks like a fucking tool (I remember Sokka not looking like a tool at all) and the way the cloths are worn on the girls is WRONG. It's left over right, right over left is for dead people (at least in Japan and they way those types of shirts are worn here in the US drives me up the wall anyway).

I somewhat agree with you OP. I like a lot of the costume designs and a couple of the actors look great (Dev Patel comes to mind). But I'm still not sold on the main trio. Every single trailer I've seen leaves me with the impression that these kids really can't act.

Not to mention, a lot of stuff that Shyamalan's said has left a bad taste in my mouth. IIRC, he has talked about how they cut out a lot of "useless frivolity" and basically are going for something Darker and Edgier. Not to mention he's told some of the actors not to watch the show (and y'know, see what the original creators intended the characters to be like and then try and capture that essence). I just think that it's not going to be a very good adaptation. I feel like the story will be there on the screen, but it's going to be missing the heart of the series, which is really what made the cartoon so great. The movie looks like it's so srs business about everything and is missing the light-hearted feel of the series.

Also, I found a TV spot somewhere (damned if I could find it now, though) where Sokka characteristically jumps and cheers for something. It made me smile.

I'm sure this alone won't put your mind to ease, but seeing moments from the show on the big screen really just make me smile, plain and simple.
