Oh please don't try to pretend that most of the Uhura wank isn't pissy K/Sers. Y'all wouldn't care nearly as much about Uhura's characterization if she weren't getting down with half of your ship on the regular.

It made her more "noticeable", but really, she's practically the only female, so she's representing everyone. And at least to me, it's more of a fact that there's no love story. We don't get to see them get together, which I don't like in any ship ever. Take a strong female character from a previous franchise and then twisting that character so she can provide shock value and give Spock someone to hug is not conducive to a great love story. It's Spock; I want to know why he's dating Uhura when he's not comfortable with his emotions. I'd be able to buy it so much more if that had obviously been their first kiss.

Trust me, as a long-time slasher, even the strongest female character and romance can't block a ship, so it's not about "blocking" a ship.

I just feel the need to inform you that this is not actually what happened in the movie. It's what you and others apparently THINK happened, but your interpretation does not truth make (thankfully -- no offense).

A little offense, because obviously it's my opinion only, and I in no way said, "this is what happened and anyone who thinks differently is wrong." As someone whose hobby is writing literary analysis and wrote too much of it in college, I am all about differing opinions. Anyone can take books or movies and each one can think something different about what happened, and heck, every one of them can have good, solid points. I could sit around all day and read different opinions, even if I don't share them, because it helps me look at all sides and even change some of my own opinions as well. It's how I went from not liking Kirk/McCoy to reading some and even plotting one out in my head. :)

I'm saying there's a difference between saying you don't like S/U because it's not to your taste (honest), and saying you don't like S/U because their relationship is toxic and should really be de-canoned and Uhura was reduced to nothing but girlfriend/love interest and she molested him in the turbolift and the filmmakers put it in just to discourage K/S (crazy).

The former is a-okay; the second I've heard with increasing frequency from a certain (apparently growing) contingent of the K/S community that OP is most likely referring to.

Gotcha. Can't argue for everyone and they most likely are referring to the crazy portion. :)

As a trek fan I have to concede that Uhura wasn't exactly a strong female character; she was made into a much more competitive, competent gal this time around. And if all of the wank, which is by and large coming from the K/S camp, isn't about ship interruption.. Well, wtf?

Well, the wank part is the more batshit insane part, right? So the more chill-minded people, even if they're K/S, don't really contribute (I didn't even know there was a huge fandom wankfest about it until recently, I'm that far removed), but if you had to choose who would be the wank instigators, it would logically *snerk* be the K/S faction. I mean, S/U shippers obviously would have no problem, neither would Kirk/McCoy because even if they don't really care for her character, they and other ships that don't involve Uhura in the mix might not care too much either way.

God, this so much.
