Ok, just a general announcement.
ONE, "trigger warnings" are for COMMON triggers only. Things like talk of rape, abuse, child abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, serious drug use, and suicide are common triggers. Less common ones are homo/transphobia/gender dysphoria, blood, needles, knives -- or traumatic events (Holocaust, genocides, earthquakes, 9/11, you know what I'm talking about). Gender identity is not a common trigger. Food is not a common trigger. Mudkips (mudkips, really?) are not a common trigger. Someone just gave me a secret with a trigger warning listed for a whole movie. No. You are doing triggers wrong.
TWO, RFTM. Or the FAQs, at least.
They're right here: http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/104153.html
- Why isn't my secret up!?!? Question 4.
- Why is the subs post closed!?!? Question 9.
- How come my second secret got posted before the first!? Is it lost!?!? Question 7.
- HOW DOES I JOINED!? IT'S THE FIRST QUESTION.

No, censoring things on the internet is not censoring free speech because if you don't like the rules of my comm you can go post your fic somewhere else, or start your own comm. Mandatory warnings are not censorship in any case as they don't in any way prevent someone from posting anything the hell they want; the rule just specifies that some content must be indicated in the header. (It's easy to spoilertext out a warning, so people who don't feel they need to be warned don't have to read warnings if they don't want to.)
Warnings are like putting nutritional information on food. Some folks have allergies.

As for censorship on the internet: technophile makes certain to put pornographic/NSFW items under a cut because they are obscene (by definition) and even the news media will censor things of that nature. However, we are not PAYING tech to commit himself to accommodating people with triggers. He's simply the maintainer of a community.
Words do not equal allergies; I'm sorry but it is very much an example of censorship to pick out each and every little potential trigger and warn for them. It is a COURTESY to do so; not MANDATORY.
Do we censor art this way? Of course not; we have things like the movie rating system or the "parental advisory" sticker for entertainment materials.
Spoilers are different, but again, shouldn't be MANDATORY to warn for. Coming to fandom secrets, you are going to be squicked and you are going to be spoiled. Your options? 1) scroll down. 2) click the little "x" button and leave.

Woaahahahahahaha, self-righteous much?
and the point I was trying to make is that EVERYONE has some type of experience; it doesn't mean that the rest of the world is obligated to make accommodations.
You may as well say 'everyone has some type of allergy so we shouldn't put any allergy warnings on food, not even for specific common allergies that can cause huge amounts of damage.' (Words are not allergies, but if you join a load of words together you get content and some forms of content are allergies. You could also get content by drawing a picture or whatever.)

Uhhh, no one said we were.

Please, please, explain how this is censorship. There are no restrictions on what can be posted on my comm, there's just a few content items that need to be warned for. How does lack of content restrictions = censorship?

...uh, whatnow? You do know that movies & videogames can be refused rating certificates because they're too obscene or too gory, right? (fact; some M-rated games can't even be legally released in Australia because the Aussies don't issue ratings over PG13 for videogames. That is censorship.)

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)Maybe he's just a more private person who doesn't feel the need to compete over who is more traumatized? He's acknowledging her pain over her traumatic experience without taking responsibility for causing it, because ... he didn't cause it. And yet you refuse to acknowlege his pain. You even mocked him by calling him self-righteous, and that is because you feel that his pain doesn't matter, simply because he dared to disagree with your view of things.
You're all hypocrites.
