Ok, just a general announcement.

ONE, "trigger warnings" are for COMMON triggers only. Things like talk of rape, abuse, child abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, serious drug use, and suicide are common triggers. Less common ones are homo/transphobia/gender dysphoria, blood, needles, knives -- or traumatic events (Holocaust, genocides, earthquakes, 9/11, you know what I'm talking about). Gender identity is not a common trigger. Food is not a common trigger. Mudkips (mudkips, really?) are not a common trigger. Someone just gave me a secret with a trigger warning listed for a whole movie. No. You are doing triggers wrong.

TWO, RFTM. Or the FAQs, at least.
They're right here: http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/104153.html
- Why isn't my secret up!?!? Question 4.
- Why is the subs post closed!?!? Question 9.
- How come my second secret got posted before the first!? Is it lost!?!? Question 7.
- HOW DOES I JOINED!? IT'S THE FIRST QUESTION.

That's it. (:

This may be difficult for you to understand, but I don't care about the trigger warnings. I truly don't. Most other readers don't either. They just skim them and ignore the big red letters. For me, they neither add nor take away from the comm. If you can't see that it's a bigger issue within fandom than just one group getting their way over another group or some pesky red lettering, then you simply aren't that smart or you haven't been paying attention. The sudden demand of trigger warnings on things like f!s are symptoms of the more far-reaching problems within fandom, not the cause of them. Problems that need to be resolved, not thrown into a pit for the loudest and bitchiest bullies to win. Those more far-reaching consequences are the things worth fighting for, and the only reason your !!!!post!!!! got a reply.

and you still don't seem to get what the hell the trigger warnings are put in place for.

it isn't for those of us who don't care about the warnings, it's for those who do.

the problem with this bitching back and forth is a far-reaching problem that exists outside of fandom: a minority group wants to take part in something and certain things have been done to make that possible. it doesn't harm the larger community, yet now this group is being called out for making these requests and the larger group is attempting to belittle and take away from what they say.

granted, i can see where this will go to shit fast, but the solution shouldn't be to get rid of the new system entirely, but find a way to make it work. all I'm seeing from the opposing side is a mocking "WELL I WANT MY FEAR OF MUDKIPS, LETTUCE AND TOE NAILS PUT UNDER THE WARNINGS!!" when that's exactly the kind of shit that they're trying to avoid.

Actually, I'm seeing quite a lot of belittling and dismissal going on on both sides, and I hope you will concede that the opposing side (those not in favor of warnings and censorship) has offered more here than simply mockery (though that has occurred too).

At some point someone is going to have to be the bigger person and say "I sympathize with your fear of insects, but we're just going to go with the big stuff for right now." Which is exactly what Technophile did. Saying "MY ISSUES ARE MORE IMPORTANT!" (even if they are), is one of the surest ways to start a war of one-upmanship. It's divisive and destructive, and you're right: once started, it never ends.

I'm not necessarily arguing against the use of trigger warnings here in this comm. I'm arguing for a better way to argue.

"I'm arguing for a better way to argue."

yeah, good luck with that. this is the internet after all, lots of people with different life experiences and expectations.

my normal inclination is to be on the side of "no warning/no censorship" but just the idea of people out there refusing to understand why it's been put in place and then trying to take away from that group and make it about them really got under my skin.
