I played the demo and it freaked me out. I want to play it because the story is great but it unnerves me too much.

Find someone in your life that makes you think of a big daddy. I could never play until a friend of mine, who's a Marine/ HUGE!, said he was the big daddy to my little sister. After that I could play on my own, and even beat the whole 2nd game.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, don't feel bad. I had to watch a walkthrough of the first level before I could get through myself. It's the scariest level in the game, imo.

I'm the same way with horror games OP, and I'll never understand why because, like you, I absolutely adore horror movies. I've watched far many too count in my years, from the 70s to present, and it takes a lot to actually frighten me.

And yet, the second you put me behind a horror game, I'm a complete wuss. Even so, I make myself play through Bioshock because I find it to be that enjoyable, and have done so surprisingly well. I have to keep motivating myself to walk around this or that corner, to enter this room and so forth, but I'M DOING IT.

[identity profile] junoluver.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's the interaction, the fact that you aren't just watching what's happening, you're immersed in it.

I haven't played the second game, but I adored the first! I'm the same with horror games, but if you give it some time and just always keep it in your head that nothing can hurt you, you can adapt to it, and I'm glad I did, it's a lot of fun when you can enjoy it. I hope you can at some point, OP!

Seriously, I'm very susceptible to horror games and movies but Bioshock never made feel scared at all, maybe it was the fact that I knew I would never ever die thanks to these damn vita-chambers... that said, it was pretty cool the way they articuled the scenes to get you scared.

[identity profile] hinata.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
If you can, find yourself listening/watching either a youtube walkthrough or as much as I hate to rec it, a Let's Play. There is so much missing information I've found on the Bioshock wiki that you can discover from the game. The audio tapes especially.

I was scared when I first started to play it, but only one incident really freaked me out (lights went out in one area suddenly), but it's pretty tame on the easiest mode setting.

(I still refuse to play Silent Hill though)

[identity profile] spectrumpheonix.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I did feel unnerved. Similar to F.E.A.R and Fallout 3, Bioshock made me feel isolated and slightly afraid of what was around every corner. But honestly? Just think of it as though you have to get from point A to point B and just kill everything inbetween. Have all the lights on, play music in the background. Just give it a go! It's too much of a good game to miss out on.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was feeling the same way as you, but I played the demo a couple of days ago and I actually really liked it and it didn't bother me much at all. Just play with the lights on.

Now, Ravenholm from HL2? That shit freaked me out so bad I don't even :(

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
(OP)

I love Ravenholm. When I first played it I was so afraid, but after the second/third play-throughs I wasn't afraid at all. Father Gregori is a badass.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've only gone through it once so far, I imagine a second play-through wouldn't be so bad, but that first time I had to have a friend walk me through it, haha.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I did that with my sister. Except where you say walk through I imagine nice and here-comes-a-zombie get ready and when I say walk through I mean GO UP ON THAT ROOF DAMMIT and laughing when the headcrabs scare her

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it was more just telling me where to go and laughing at me when I managed to kill myself on a barrel and yelling "SHOOT FOR THE HEAD, SHOOT FOR THE FUCKING HEAD!"

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Both games are fucking terrifying, but it really adds to the experience of it. :)

[identity profile] docsaico.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I got the first game for Christmas two or three years ago. I heard so many great things about it and I'd read about the story a little. It sounded so interesting! I'm a sucker for a great story. So I played for about an hour.

It terrified me more than I can express. My brother loves the game - it's his favorite of all time - and anytime my bro asks me to watch him play, I have to say no cuz it just scares me too much. I love the story - I've spoiled myself as well - but I can't play the game.

ESSENTIALLY, I feel your pain, anon. Sorry it scared you so much, too. :(

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I had this exact same reaction to the first Resident Evil game on GameCube, even though I'd been playing the series for years on other consoles. O.O And have since, but I still can't go back to that one.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't play those ones either, although I watched my brother play them.
