How very ironic that I saw this movie for the first time last night, and I see this secret. Sorry but I don't get why it's highly rated. I don't hate it though, and I've always liked Ingrid.

I have never even come across a hater before. The idea of there being masses of them is.. something unknown to me. And I wish it had stayed unknown. D:

I'm kind of not surprised because there's so much praise for it, but still, I have better things to do with my time than devote myself to talking about something I don't like.

That said, I'm not a fan of the whole tragic romance trope, and find that thinking of it as a love story between Rick and Renault where Rick's ex girlfriend shows up and creates some chaos that Rick has to deal with and which pushes Rick and Renault to actually make a stand about the war instead of burying their heads in the sand is a more satisfying narrative for me personally.

There's probably a laundry list of reasons why people hate it.

Instead of listing them, I'm going to pull out the blu-ray copy that my oh so awesome husband bought me for Christmas and watch it again.

Things I hate about Casablanca:
1. Rick's ex is obnoxious and wishy-washy and has to have her mind made up for her.
2. Rick is an unrepentant jerk. By contrast, his younger self rots your teeth.
3. 'As Time Goes By' is a drunken-tempo'd earworm.
4. Rick wangsts a LOT.
5. What's-his-face that Rick's ex is now with is the ultimate Gary Stu.
6. Everyone seems to think this is the best romance of all time, when the character traits of the two main characters make them annoying.

Things I love about Casablanca:
1. Renault. God bless you Claude Rains for saving the mess of a film.
2. Peter Lorre.
3. Sam, for being the only positive and visible role model for black people in cinema for ten or fifteen years.
4. La Marseillaise.

people actively and vocally dedicate time to hating Casablanca? What? I love Casablanca! While I can see people thinking it is nowhere near as good as the hype makes it out to be, I find it hard to imagine actually finding it offensive.
