Hey bro, stop dragging the rest of the internet into your secret with you. We're a big place you know.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If you took the screenshot, you should get credit for it. Especially if you decided to put text on it. Also, as long as you say the fanart isn't yours, I don't think there's a problem with wanting credit for making the icon from it. Why so mad?

[identity profile] piledriver.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
why should you deserve credit for taking a screen shot?

hurr i prezed a buttin i can haz creditz?

[identity profile] sky-queen3.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If you also cropped the screenshot, sure you can. Also if you did a lot of screenshots you can too. ^_^

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... yeah. Regardless of how much effort you put into something, you should get credit. I mean, if someone did a quick five minute sketch and put it up, you wouldn't say they don't deserve credit just because they didn't try hard, right? They still took the time to do it. Same as if they made an icon and it only took a few minutes. I can cap something, crop and resize, adjust brightness. Not rocket science, but I'd still like to be credited if someone decides to use it, because I made it, even if it didn't take me long to do it.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of icons of the sorts you're complaining about are really well-made. Surely if someone put the thought and time into designing and making them, we ought to give that person credit?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand that people want credit for their icons, given that effort has been put into them. But:

"Textless icons are not bases", because your effort of bravely cropping the screenshot and tweaking the colours will be ruined if someone slaps on a filter or a couple of words?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I put that on my icon posts simply because I've had people take the textless icons, alter them minimally, and then figure that oh-so-cool blue filter they slapped on there means they shouldn't credit the work I'd put into it first. After that happened a number of times, I've just gone the route of "Textless icons are not bases, if you want any alterations made, I'd be more than happy to do it for you." :/

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Again: how much work is there in cropping a picture and tweaking the colours, or am I Doing It Wrong when I spend < 3 minutes on preparing a base?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I do all my work from the ground up; taking my own screencaps (or searching and crediting others for the specific ones I want), cropping, filtering, making things legible/not too sharp/not too blurry/lightening/darkening/etc etc. I like my work to look a certain way, and it takes some effort for me to be entirely happy with them. Other people might be fine cropping an image, slapping colors on it and calling it a day, and that's fair enough, but I work at what I do. Maybe I'm the one doing it wrong? But just because an icon looks "simple" and clean, doesn't mean there wasn't a lot of work involved to get it there. So, yeah, I don't think it's that hard to save the username as the filename for an icon.

I will also add that on the icons I do just "slap together," I will put up a note that says the bases are free to grab and alter, but for the most part that's a rare occurrence.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the least you can do, if you use an icon that you didn't make, is put in a little blurbyblurb next to the icon (like the icon description or whatev) that you didn't make it, and a rough location of where you got it. That's what I did with some of the icon whose creators I didn't remember (because I save a lot of icons on my computer, and then just use them months and months later). Yeah, they didn't make the original source material, but someone crafted that icon, and that someone wasn't you. If you can't remember who originally made the icon, then at the very least make it known that you're not the one who made it, so that it doesn't look like you're just stealing their work.

And on an unrelated note, Pikachu is so adorable. <3

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
IAWTC

Although I'd say Pikachu is giving off more of a badass vibe in the secret image. xD

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
But he's just adorable even when he looks badass. LOOK AT THOSE LI'L CHEEKS. I'd totally pinch them if he wouldn't electrocute me for it. :D

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha fair point, actually. *Awws* Ah Pikachu, you deadly, adorable furball. <3

[identity profile] doom-cheesepuff.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the only reason I like people to give credit is because, when I see an icon that I like, I like to go back and look at the other icons the person has made. I understand that this isn't why everyone else asks for credit, but *shrugs*.

[identity profile] piledriver.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
wow totally agree

all this credit shit is just so stupid

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
While I disagree, I was thinking "alright, I can see how you'd feel that way," until you put making something with a quote next to cropping a screenshot.

Sorry if that sounds silly, but that feels a bit too close to "text art isn't art" to me.

[identity profile] riverfleur.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind giving credit and I always do if the person asked, but I can understand the annoyance because if you want to save something you have to remember who it was that made it. But I do credit if someone asks.

What does get on my nerves is if the person asks for credit but doesn't even give credit to what they used. Like the source of the fanart or quote they are using. I can make an icon by myself too, it's usually the stock I care about.

[identity profile] sky-queen3.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
They want may credit for the composition of the icon. Despite it not seeming like a lot of work, it can be. Editing colour and cropping is work, as well as choosing good text.

As for fanart icons, icon makers should seek permission before using fanart as an icon base, most artists are cool as long as they are mentioned. :)

Personally, I’d like credit but I don’t demand it, as long as when asked they say they got it from me. Does that make any sense?

What's your oppinion on mini-movie/animated gif icons?

[identity profile] heartsyhawk.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think I get what you're saying, and it is frustrating when you find an icon which literally only required them to catch a screenshot (and yea...I've got a printscreen button on my keyboard too...) and they get all diva-y about credit...but sometimes they do deserve it.

Incidentally I've no idea who made the icon I'm using for this one (its the only one I use that I didn't make myself)but well, wasn't me.
