And the atrocious "Oh! Ref! He hitted me in the face! D:" diving going on.

Whoever wins the cup this year should be presented with an Oscar.

what the hell are you talking about

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it be sweet if the world cup was mixed gender in both theory and practice?

I get this. Shallow sports fans are shallow irrespective of gender!

Some years, [livejournal.com profile] outofbeta and me make collections of sexually objectifying news articles about female players at Wimbledon. Watching the Winter Olypmic skating on US tv was also quite enlightening in this regard. When straight guys watch women's sports it's often to perv and to make sexual comments about the women who take part, and this is accepted as professional journalism. Why shouldn't women watch the World Cup just to perv all over the pretty?

I get the anger, but punching the person who punched you doesn't make the bruise go away. If anything, you are considered a violent person too.
This isn't the way.

...It's fandom. There is no bruise, just a raging girlboner.

"and this is accepted as professional journalism"
You don't make it sound like you're cool with that.

I'm not cool with RPF fannishness being presented as journalism. That doesn't mean I'm not cool with RPF fannishness. Have some respect for the 4th wall, guys.

Women not being taken seriously in sports is a SRSBSNS subject for me and I thought it was about that. Ah Fandom.

[identity profile] evatheninja.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I hate how most men can't take women's sports seriously, or watch without commenting on the player's looks. I'm a girl, and I play ice hockey, and I'm tired of hearing about how its not a real sport and how we're all fat dykes.

[identity profile] 4-and-20.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of a couple of weeks ago in the lead up to the soccer when the news spent all of 30 seconds reporting on how our women’s soccer team won the goddamn Asian Cup and then proceeded to spend like five minutes talking about the men’s TRAINING session for the fucking world cup we never stood a chance in reaching the finals for. What the fuck.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
What the...I'm sorry, but those guys from the news are assholes.

[identity profile] mistress-siana.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Our women's team won the World Cup twice in a row. That's well, kind of nice, according to the news, and some of them are even making an honest effort not to be sexist.

When someone on the man's team sprains an ankle, it's OMG BREAKING NEWS STOP THE PROGRAM WE'RE DOING A SPECIAL.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is why I like horse racing. I'm not saying it's perfect, it's still a pretty old fashioned sport. There aren't as many women trainers and jockeys as they're oughta be. Some of the arguments against running fillies and mares with the boys get a little silly. Most of the Kentucky Oaks coverage is spent looking at hats and passing out food and drink recipies...Actually, even on Derby Day, most mentions of women at the track are "ooooo, look at the pretty hats they're wearing!"

But, when women are there, it's not made as such a big deal anymore unless they're looking for statistics and a good story. They're all dealing with the same animal anyway, it's just a matter of getting your hands on the good ones.

It annoys the shit out of me when fans who watch men's footie say women's footie is a joke. I remember getting into a bitchy argument with a girl from Norway who stated that she felt women's footie was joke, saying that she doesn't think women can be fit enough to play it as well as the men and they worry too much about pretty hair and nails to properly play football right. I really just think girls who don't enjoy women's football don't enjoy the sport for the sport. They watch men's football because they want to talk about the size of a player's penis, and ship him with the other attractive players.
