Fandom and lj seem is heavily populated by females.
Statistically speaking if you encounter some random person in lj or fandom you are mostly likely to be right if you guess "female."

Obviously, it does not mean everyone in fandom is female. There are definitely a significant amount of non-female people.

I am curious as to why lj and fandom seem to be so heavily dominated by females.

Even though I'm sure this is true for the majority of my online fandom circles, I still try not to assume gender on lj users I don't know, by saying "s/he" and "him/her" when referring to them, and I've had people call me on that, saying, "Dude, I'm a girl, it's in my userinfo, why are you doing that?" So I'm sure I'll mess up someday and use "she" and then I'll be told I'm wrong. Dang.

The boys are out there, but I mostly assume that you're a girl until you say otehrwise. And I'll promptly forget the next time I see you around cause bad memory yay.


The conventions I went to there were men there but it was so few it was rather funny. Even the guests had a few jokes at it.
