OMG your analogy is so spot-on. Liking something that is super popular is EXACTLY like being hanged by a KKK mob.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And your critique is spot on because she totes specified KKK!

Twilight has done more damage to women's rights than sharia law.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...can you explain how exactly? Or are you being sarcastic 8|a

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No it didn't? Twilight is pretty horrible, but it's not sharia law. Or are you being sarcastic?

[identity profile] paytofay.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Twilight is a feminist manifesto, man. Never before has a male character been so haphazardly assembled to fit the exact objectifying sexual cravings of women across the board with such total disregard to artistic integrity or realism. It's like boob-wielding Budweiser commercials for chicks.

Meh, I know plenty of people who listed as a guilty pleasure. I have only bugged them about it a few times.

If anyone has concrete defense of it as something other than a guilty pleasure, that is neat.

[identity profile] puddinchan.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Who are you to bash people for their opinion of something you like? If you like it, and most other people don't, fine. That's your choice, and I'll respect that.

But I don't like it when people shove their opinions into other people's faces like it's fact. It might be a good book in your opinion, but others might not. It's called uniqueness.

In my opinion, Twilight is basically published Mary Sue fanfic, but that's my opinion that I expect others to respect, and in turn, I'll respect that our opinions differ. That's just life.

[identity profile] sharknasty.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
First book was average with the rest of the novels spiraling down into the shitpile afterward. First movie was FUCK TERRIBLE with the rest so far being tolerable enough to watch. Graphic novel was good because it fits the story better than a novel format. The entire fandom/hatedom thing has gotten to the point where I can easily say it is the worst thing about this saga.

This is why

In the off chance that somebody out there hasn't seen this, how Twilight should have gone:

I only pretend to agree too.

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience the hatedom can be just as bad as the fandom. 'Tis best to just smile and nod and hope whoever you're talking to doesn't start on a tirade, regardless of which side they're on. XD

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
It is anti-feminist, and it is one of the worst books ever. I have friends who read it for guilty pleasure (and I know that everyone is entitled to their guilty pleasures), but I'm just so tired of the fail. I don't normally go around hounding people who really like the book because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings irl and I'm typically a lurker in fandom, but the hype over the books and new movie is really starting to make me sick. If you spend all of your time dissecting things you'll find that most everything you enjoy has something unsavory or anti-feminist about it and at some point you just have to let things go and enjoy what you enjoy; however, Twilight is just a little too tasteless and offensive for me to handle. If you really do love it, OP, just try to recognize its faults (that's how I deal with my guilty pleasure fandoms -although admittedly I don't think mine are as horrific as Twilight-). Maybe if you demonstrate your understanding of the books' shortcomings to your friends but still hold that you like it anyway, they won't be so harsh with you. Sorry if I sound like a jerk because I still believe that Twilight is terrible, but if you were my friend, I wouldn't be angry with you for liking it. I talk about how much I dislike Twilight to my other friends who dislike it, and don't bring the topic up around those who are fans.

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I wish all these secret Twilight lovers grew a fucking backbone and just came out with it. Do they really think they'll lose friends for liking that? If you lose friends for such a ridiculous reason, they weren't your friends to begin with. I can't help but think they know it's shit but they still like it, which is the way in which you should like shitty things: knowing they're baaaaaaaaaaaaad but still enjoying them. A guilty self-aware pleasure.

Twilight is mysoginist crap, and stupidly bad-written, and it's disgustingly overrated, but it isn't the only thing that has those characteristics: you can be sure your friends will have something ridiculously tasteless they enjoy too xD (all of us do!)

OH GOD NO YOU LIKE SOMETHING YOUR FRIENDS DON'T? NOOOOO.

Really, agreeing with [livejournal.com profile] sara_rojo. It gets old, listening to people bitch about how they like it but are "afraid" to talk about it.

[identity profile] onlyinthislight.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
If you like it fine, I really don't give two shits. But, just because you do like it doesn't mean it ISN'T sexist, badly written sue-fic. Don't wave off the very fair and serious critiques against this book and what it stands for just because you don't want to feel guilty for liking it.

I have friends who like shitty shitty things, but are aware of and willing to admit to those work's flaws, and look at them critically. I respect that. Hell, I myself love some shitty shitty stuff. But does that make the shitty shitty stuff objectively awesome stuff just because I subjectively love it? No.

People who turn a blind eye or flat out deny all the criticism and harm a work or series causes just because they like it? ...

Sorry, no respect here. Take your cognitive dissonance elsewhere.

I could have written this, Anon. I know a lot of literature snobs, and when they start bitching about Twilight, I just tune them out so they won't lecture me. /:

(Anonymous) 2010-06-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I miss when people used to make fun of it just because it sucked, before the "bad messages" crap started. Raise your own damn kids. It's especially delicious when it's the same people who made fun of anti-Harry Potter people and told them to raise their own kids. Irony.
