I hear ya. A lot of the time it's a popularity contest in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel.
Although I get page-views, it's usually for my less serious stuff :/

Maybe you should submit your art to more groups? And also pimp your DA stuff here on lj?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have this same "problem". It's something I don't understand as well... I get how certain artists are the popular hot shit, but I don't understand /how/ or /why/ they get picked to be the popular ones...

I am thinking of three certain artists in a particular fandom, and everyone tries to base their style and way of drawing off them...on the chan website, the users always say "You should try drawing more like ---- and ----."

[identity profile] starshipblues.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're on deviantart you should expect this. That site is filled with 14 year old fanbrats. We all feel the frustration of the poularity contest, but in the end you've just got to be happy what little appreciation you get. Remember, its all for fun. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can say to this is...
"Welcome to dA, anon!"

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes sketchy stuff feels more dynamic and lifelike than really precise, detailed work. Or the doodles might have funny/touching stories behind them, or the subjects might be more popular, or etc. Hard to say without knowing who you are, but there are all kinds of reasons for someone liking one picture more than another, and they often have nothing to do with quality.

Maybe try some doodles yourself, of different fandoms (or even OCs), and see if they get more attention? If nothing else, it might be fun and it's good to expand your horizons once in a while.

It's because your art doesn't have any porn in it. Probably.

[identity profile] chambergambit.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If you feel compelled to ask that last question, it's probably true.

[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
people like ugly things

DRAW UGLY STICK FIGURES

instant popularity.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
IS THAT XKCD'S SECRET?

[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
IDK WHO THAT IS BUT PROBABLY

[identity profile] michygeary.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
XKCD is a pretty popular webcomic, almost exclusively with stick figures.

How about... maybe they don't know you?
Join a couple of clubs, make sure people actually see what you draw and maybe you'll get more comments. Otherwise what you post just shows up for half a second on the home page.

And concerning your point about pageviews, if the idea behind what you're drawing is funny or interesting, a lot of people will like it even if the art is bad. That's how Deviantart works: if people relate to it, they'll comment.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding (thirding?) the suggestion to join Groups on DA. If it doesn't exist for your fandom specifically, you could start one, or find one where your art fits in thematically (since they're not all fandom based).

And don't worry, lots of really skilled folks don't get a lot of views/comments either.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Bro, I was a nobody for like 10 years. Granted, during much of that time I was utter shit, but still- not exactly BNF material.

Things that I found turned around my message box overnight:
- Getting into an actual active fandom
- Hanging out at said fandom's hub (often hard to find, I know)
- Joining DA Group for said fandom
- Drawing and drawing and drawing like a maniac

Those people who get like a ton of faves on crap are probably people who comment/fave like their lives depend on it. They're probably highly social, so friends just sort of get drawn to them and +fav. Just put yourself out there more, recognition will come- there's always someone who will like what you do.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
DA is moreso about Socializing. Groups and clubs are a good way to have your art noticed. Also, it helps to ask your friends for their thoughts on your work.

Sadly, the weirder fandoms will attract the most attention. You have to work for attention in the good stuff. Or you know, just draw Hetalia or Naruto. Or shitty Star Wars flash videos like me.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
From my experiences on dA, there are plenty of amazingly talented artists who never get more than a few thousand pageviews. It's pretty sad, but I guess that's the way of the world.

If you're looking for recognition (or even being a part of a community), maybe sites like livejournal and the like would be better for you?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
There's a meme going around Livejournal to get to know other artists here and to get other artists to know you. A lot of them are in fandom. You might be interested in filling it out (if you haven't already, OP):

omg you read my mind. well, back when i drew fanart. but i do very much feel the same way about my original art.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's all about who you know. Make friends on LJ, post to LJ, and they'll comment and pimp you like mad. Try TUMBLR, too! :D

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's really about what you draw, and where people see it. Just by posting it on dA, there is only a small chance it will attract views, as it will only appear on the main/newest stream. As others said, try groups, advertizing and stuff if you want views.

Anyway, I have two friends on dA. One is an incredibly talented artist with unique style drawing mostly original art and she gets a around 2000 views per artwork, tops (even though she is active at dA), while the other girl, who has a regular 10-year-old's drawing skills, got like, 50000 views on a Naruto/Hinata drawing once.

I don't know, just enjoy it.

[identity profile] haku23.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's all about the fandom tbh. Cause even shitty stuff will get looked at or faved if it's for a popular fandom. Case and point my most popular pieces are shitty image manipulations for Kingdom Hearts I did about 3 years ago. : | Honestly though it's not all good. My friend does fanart for Naruto and such and 3/4s of the comments are shit like "omg liek dis is so kawaii".

[identity profile] michygeary.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you comment on other people's art? That's usually how you'll want to network and get more traffic for your own art. If other people know who you are, they're more likely to check out your page and watch your art when they realize it's good. Second the suggestion others have made about posting your art to some popular comms for your fandom here on LJ. And good luck. =)
