I don't think it actually teaches anyone history. I think they get interested in history because of Hetalia and find real info elsewhere. :)

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This. At least that's how it was for me. Also made it easier for me to remember the stuff I learned in my history 101 class by giving me something to associate facts and stuff with instead of just memorizing them.

Yeah, this. That was what Big Bang Theory did for me and physics. I didn't really learn any in the show (besides little laws here and there, at least), but it gave me the motivation to do better in my physics class and actually gave me an interest.

[identity profile] jencatd.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
This. The series makes a good starting point for learning more about different periods in history. :D

I have younger friends that are Germany/Poland shippers and they don't get why it breaks my brain. I wish more of them knew more history ...

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? Most idiotic pairing ever. Tell them why it breaks your brain. Beat some sense into them!

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest I ship it, but during present times only and ONLY if the fanwork does involve or mention awkwardness due to the horrible past issues. Than again I'm guilty of shipping a lot of things, as long as it's done tastefully.

In b4 comments saying that no tasteful fanwork can come out of this pairing ever...

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that'd work well enough present-day, as far as rarepairs go. In fact, I'd say the horrible shared past makes it kind of an interesting concept, as long as it was dealt with.
If they ship it any time before, say, 1960, though? Whaaaat.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why not, if it is set into the present? Loads of countries have had bad past with each other but are trying to work things through today...

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I cringe a bit when people say Hetalia taught them more about history.
Some people are interested because of it and do their own research, which is cool, but... even though there is the cool random historical event thrown in there every now and then, the webcomic isn't historically accurate, and the anime is even less so.

[identity profile] doxorz.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've learned some history from reading fic, and I'm getting interested in the history of my favorite characters' respective countries, but I don't rely on the actual show for my basic history knowledge or anything.

I usually associate history events with the Hetalia characters in my head. It makes history funnier.

THIS. Hetalia fandom teaches me history ^^

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hetalia itself teaches preciously little else than national stereotypes as seen from Japan.

The fandom, on the other hand.

Ah, Hetalia fans. There are some really bright ones, and then there are some who are just... silly. I can think of plenty of beneficial things that come out of reading or watching Hetalia (even ones related to history, like people above have mentioned about it increasing interest or being useful as a study aid), but learning real history? Honestly? I do hope that most fans know that the portrayal of events is quite inaccurate.

All the Hetalia fans I have ever talked to have said they knew it was inaccurate and all it did was perhaps interest them in a certain country, event, etc.

I've never met those "I learned so much about the American Revolution after reading America's Storage Cleaning Strip!" people. I feel I'm doing it wrong.

I have, however, learned actual history for really well-written fic. There are some great fanworks for this series.

[identity profile] mature.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can say in my defense is that it makes me want to go look up the real history, as did both the Shadow Hearts and Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha series.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly, it just brings up a topic that intrests me and then I go find out the facts for myself. However, some of the writers... damn do they know their stuff.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow that's some shitty translation.

Hetalia has never taught me anything I don't already know. If I don't know it, I can look it up on Wikipedia or some other place.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of...

Not even the series takes itself as seriously as the fans do. It's just a silly comic, and I don't see how people claim you have to be a Historian to enjoy it. It's not even accurate, why is there so many elitism in this fandom?

[identity profile] splintercat.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I love everyone saying that "all the fans know it's not accurate" when the intended audience is Japanese kids and no, they don't fucking know that it's inaccurate.

I could care less about the "weeaboos" reading/watching it (and I think the show is pretty cute myself), but Japanese kids learning that Japan's relationship with China during WWII was a brotherly one gone slightly off-course? Um, I sort of see a problem with that.

Psst. "Hetalia teaches me history" usually doesn't mean "I believe Hetalia is 100% factual". It usually means that it sparks an interest in people to go do some proper research on their own outside of class. It can also help really well with remembering dates of events. I'm usually terrible with historic dates, but Hetalia's helped me memorize a couple. Sure, there probably are some idiots that think Hetalia is completely factual, but that isn't all of us. I don't think it's even most of us.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
lol u sed weeaboo
ur so kewl

[identity profile] aunt-zelda.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that Hetalia teaches the fans history, it's that it inspires people to learn about history (and give them funny mental pictures to go along with actual events.) Having always found history fascinating, I didn't need cute bishies and HoYay to want to learn history, but it's certainly a whole new kind of fun now that I've seen/read Hetalia.
