I can't comment on the other series, but I just finished NGE last week (I know, lol anime n00b), and actually, the last two episodes were my favorite thing about it. *shrug*

I actually think Gurren Lagann took itself too seriously to be enjoyable (I agree that NGE can be hard to watch and pretentious, though I really like it anyway). It didn't start out that way, though.

I can see your point about the way the NGE TV series ended (though I always liked the ending, and the End of Evangelion movie)

Mind, I haven't looked into either in the internet realm, but Gurren Lagann is pretty universally beloved among everyone I know who has watched it.

But yeah there's various theories for the last 2 episodes, including: they failed at trying to be deep, Hideaki Anno got pissed at fandumb, they ran out of money, embezzlement scandal, etc.

Me, I haven't seen TTGL yet, but I'll always love NGE for it's themes and everything, I don't care that the ending was totally ambiguous, and I'm cool with GAINAX being staffed by a bunch of misanthropic otaku -- whatevs. It will always be awesome (and is probably awesome precisely because of said things).

I agree with this secret pretty much exactly! Not that it matters. You can't start discussing anything with hardcore GAINAX fans unless you're just as obsessed as they are; otherwise it's just frothing at the mouth no matter what your opinion is.
