It was an older promotional art for the movie before Miyazaki decided to split the one girl into two sisters.

I believe it's an older promotional poster. In the original movie script, there was only one little girl. Then there were more changes, and that little girl was split into two characters to add more conflict.

I live in a very Asian-American city, and when Totoro appeared onscreen for the first time, me and about two other people in my row pointed and let out a gasp. All at the same time. It was awesome.

I have a part-time job at a movie theater as an usher and because we have to go stand and wait for everyone to leave, we see the end of the movie. So I caught a glimpse of Totoro and immediately exclaimed, "IT'S TOTORO!" to every usher around me. And found that at least three or four other people knew what I was talking about. It was amazing.
