Not to get caught up in all the wank happening above, but I almost wonder whether you're joking because I don't agree at all.

While he is indeed a nice guy, he also has a arrogant side and has been very vocal about his own ability (moreso than most other skaters, who are a necessarily arrogant bunch anyway). He has a history of bitching out every skater he's ever lost to and criticizing them, and complaining constantly about how the system doesn't massively favor his strengths over those of his competitors. Like when he complained that JButt won the world title without the quad in 2008 (Brian had gold in 2007 and got silver in 2008), like every time he complains about the base value of the quad not being almost double that of all other jumps, like when he said:

"it was the Canadians who created the (new scoring system) to favor the North Americans for Vancouver. You have to know that their skaters, often homosexuals, specialize in effeminate skating. In a flash, they went from 10th place to the podium."

Yeah. He has also said very nice things about many skaters, and he's not the only one out there making inflammatory comments, but he did have that arrogant side with comments that seemed uncalled for, especially from a seasoned skater. Sometimes it seemed like he would rather insult other skaters, the scoring system, etc. rather than work on the gaps in his own ability. Let's hope that's changed, I guess.

Hm, you may be right, he did say some bad things. But I still stand by my opinion. I think he's one of the nicest skaters and from what interviews I've seen with him I agree about the current scoring system (not the quote you showed though). Skating used to be about show and ability, it's not so balanced now.

Well, my view might be colored by personal experience. I asked him for an autograph and we chatted amicably for few minutes, he was very pleasant.

Well, I agree with your opinion. He does seem to be one of the nicest skaters out there. I simply acknowledge that he's said some bad things, but in the end that doesn't detract much from my overall impression of him. Nobody's perfect.

It's kind of cool that you met him though... I wish I could meet him... That would be like a dream come true, haha.

"it was the Canadians who created the (new scoring system) to favor the North Americans for Vancouver. You have to know that their skaters, often homosexuals, specialize in effeminate skating. In a flash, they went from 10th place to the podium."

Jesus. Do you have a source/link for that quote? Not doubting you at all, but I'd like to pass that along to a few friends who will ask for a source :/ I'd assumed since he and Weir seem to be friends, that he was comfortable with the homosexual effeminate skaters. Sigh.

I definitely remember his bitching about losing to quadless Buttle on '08 at the press conference afterward. *Right* in front of Jeff.

Sorry about the late reply, I forgot about this thread... He gave an interview to a French newspaper in, iirc, early 2010. It was reported on many other news sites... Here's one with the original French:

http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Ffr.canoe.ca%2Fsports%2Fvancouver2010%2Fnouvelles%2Farchives%2F2010%2F02%2F20100218-141805.html&sl=fr&tl=en

And this news site has the English translation I quoted:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:EdBNbLw41KwJ:www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Ignorance%2520without%2520borders/2589137/story.html%3Fid%3D2589137+brian+joubert&cd=7&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=firefox-a

This situation reminds me of when he sued his girlfriend for telling a magazine he was gay: people say he did it for his career, but I think some people find it more acceptable because of the distance. I don't think we'd nod and smile if Lysacek sued Belbin or Liukin or even Weir (who may have implied it once) for saying he was gay...

Nevertheless, a part of me likes to believe that Joubert said those things because of the decline in his own career, lashing out with cheap homophobic slurs. The fact that every skater who beat him at Worlds 08 and 09 was Canadian or American comes to mind... :/ It doesn't excuse the homophobia, but his apparent friendship with Weir does suggest he isn't actually a bad guy. That's what I'd like to think, anyway.

And this is the original French newspaper that interviewed him, I think
